This dataset contains archaeological and heritage sites of the Marmarica region (NE-Libya/NW-Egypt), ranging from the Late Bronze to the Roman times. It has been developed in the framework of the PERAIA project, which aims to analyse the long-term history and interaction patterns along the harsh environments of north-eastern Africa. The records contain accurate geographic location of sites, including place names, typology, chronology, and metadata of documented remains, along with information regarding the environmental and ecological context. Additionally, the dataset accounts for the specificities of the region’s varying environmental conditions and their potential impact on archaeological heritage. All this information associated with each archaeological site was collected from published field data surveys, maps, archaeological reports, and it was subsequently cross-checked with historical aerial photographs and satellite imagery to detect, and to register known and unknown sites within the study area. Regarding the potential reuse of all this data, the dataset is deposited on the project website and linked to Zenodo.

Open-archaeo (https://open-archaeo.info) is a comprehensive list of open software and resources created by and for archaeologists. It is a living collection—itself an open project—which as of writing includes 548 entries and associated metadata. Open-archaeo documents what kinds of software and resources archaeologists have produced, enabling further investigation of research software engineering and digital peer-production practices in the discipline, both under-explored aspects of archaeological research practice.

An Annotated Compilation of Chronometric Dates for the Middle-Upper Palaeolithic Transition (45-30 ka BP) in Northern Iberia (Spain)
Q1 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2023-01-01 DOI: 10.5334/joad.113
Mikel Díaz-Rodríguez, Trine Kellberg Nielsen, Andreas Maier, Felix Riede
The dataset described in this paper presents an annotated compilation of absolute dates obtained from archaeological sites located in northern Iberia corresponding broadly to the Cantabrian region (Spain). It consists mainly of radiocarbon dates chronologically framed between 45–30 ka BP. This is the period when the last Neanderthals disappeared and the first Anatomically Modern Humans dispersed into northern Iberia, widely considered a key region for understanding the patterns and processes of this transition. Providing chronological information as well as serving as palaeodemographic proxies, this novel compilation facilitates new analyses of this key period. The dataset contains 224 dates from 37 archaeological sites and more than 87% of the dates included have been positively assessed for use. It is available at Github and linked to Zenodo with the aim to ensure accessibility, reproducibility and continued extension.

Archaeobotanical and Zooarchaeological (Large Mammal Bone, Shell and Fish Remains) Data from the ‘Palace and Landscape at Palaikastro’ (PALAP) Excavation Project, Crete, Greece

The dataset presented here includes four .csv files with primary archaeobotanical, large mammal bone, mollusc and fish remains data, recovered during the PALAP project at Palaikastro, east Crete, Greece, between 2013 and 2015. The data describe bioarchaeological remains from the south-east sector of the Bronze Age town at Palaikastro, recovered with systematic sampling and employing flotation, dry-sieving and hand collection. All remains were identified and quantified using established methodologies and were then stored at the premises of the British School at Athens in Crete (Ayios Antonios centre, Palaikastro). The dataset will be of use to archaeologists working in the Aegean and beyond and can contribute to key debates related to the Bronze Age, such as the emergence and economic organisation of urban centres.

An Archaeological Radiocarbon Database of Japan

We present a radiocarbon database for the Japanese archipelago compiled from over 5,500 site excavation reports covering a chronological span from 55,000 BP to the present day. The complete database in Japanese contains over 44,000 entries, providing contextual information directly obtained from descriptions provided in the site reports. Here we provide a curated English translation of the database, containing a subset of 39,284 dates from the original database, which excludes duplicates and errors and includes new information concerning the dated material.
