In her article, Nadia Vidro quotes an unknown passage from the Karaite halakhic treatise of Jacob al-Qirqasānī (d. 927) that is missing in the Nemoy edition. The section deals with the methods of calculating the Hebrew calendar used by various Jewish sects throughout history. According to the author, this passage is related to R. Saʿadya Gaon’s “Book of Distinction” (Kitāb al-tamyīz) and includes entire passages from his commentary on Genesis. The article provides the missing part of the Nemoy edition, as well as a critical edition and an English translation of an excerpt that deals with the calendars of various streams in Judaism.

Aharon Choueka
The late Professor Choueka founded Genazim, the computation unit of the Friedberg Genizah Project (FGP) and headed it for over ten years (2005-2016). He was the spirit, the catalyst, and the architect of the FGP, and was responsible for the digitization of the Cairo Genizah manuscripts. This enterprise revolutionized the research field of Jewish studies. The treasures of culture and knowledge stored in the Genizah, which in the past were known to only a handful of scholars, have become accessible to a wide audience of scholars and, in fact, to anyone who is interested. The late Professor Choueka also helped shape the character and availability of the online version of Ginzei Qedem and published important articles here. His important life’s work is reviewed in this issue by his son, Dr. Aharon Choueka, in the article that opens the volume.

The biblical manuscript known as the Aleppo Codex (Keter Aram Tzova), which became famous for its reliability and accuracy as well as for its colorful history as an object, is at the center of Neria Klein’s article. The author discusses the period of the codex’s presence in Egypt and tries to find out whether it was already then considered an exemplary version of the Bible, who used it, which audiences had access to it and whether it already had a permanent and usual name. His research is based on ten Genizah documents that he grouped together to answer these questions.

Nissim Sabbato discusses the siddur of the twelfth-century figure, R. Shlomo ben Nathan. He clarifies biographical details about the rather obscure figure of R. Shlomo, discusses the structure of the siddur and the purpose of its writing, as well as analyzing the halakhic discussions interwoven throughout it. Sabbato also discusses the reception of the siddur and points to its considerable influence on Karaite circles in the 14th century. The article includes an appendix with a description of all the manuscripts and Genizah fragments of the siddur.

The article by M.A. Friedman, `The blessing of a Karaite and his excommunication: topics in the approach to Karaites in the writings of R. Abraham and his father Maimonides,” opens with a previously unpublished halakhic responsum by R. Abraham Maimuni. This responsum deals with the saying of Amen after a Karaite blessed a circumcision and with the excommunicating of the Karaites as the Cuthites (Samaritans) had been excommunicated in the past. According to the author’s reading, R. Abraham Maimuni rules in his responsum that the Karaites should not be excommunicated “at this time” as the sectarians used to be excommunicated in the past. He demonstrates that in this ruling, R. Abraham Mainuni adopted his father’s approach in his Commentary on the Mishnah. Later, the author presents sources that indicate a moderate attitude of Maimonides and R. Abraham Maimuni towards the Karaites. His conclusion is that although he condemned the Karaite’s methods and imitating them, R. Abraham Maimuni believed that in their worship, and especially in their prayers, there were proper and good practices that were not contrary to the Torah and the words of the Sages and therefore the Rabbanites should imitate them.

The article discusses the lament, its language, its content and its necessary attribution to R. Judah Halevi. The reader is also presented with a complete critical edition of the lament, that the author compiled from two different manuscripts in the Genizah.

Ehrlich’s article deals with evening prayers (‘arvit) on weekdays according to ancient siddurim from the Land of Israel preserved in the Genizah. In his article he presents to the reader fourteen fragments of siddurim according to the ancient custom of the Land of Israel, to which he attaches for comparison and discussion another three Genizah fragments, in which the custom is a mixture of the custom of Babylonia and the custom of the Land of Israel. In his discussion, he comes to new conclusions about the structure of prayer and its development over the years.
