Alfonso and Adelard of Bath; concluding remarks and the astronomical data contained in Pedro Alfonso's polemical work Dialogus Petri et Moysei iudei .

The passage that concerns us appears at the culmination of a series of carefully reasoned arguments. Part 2 of the Guide for the Perplexed opens with Maimonides undertaking to demonstrate the existence of God. In order to keep the question of the eternity or creation of the world open, he proceeds on parallel tracks.1 On the hypothesis of the eternity of the world, he offers four philosophic demonstrations for the existence of a first cause of the universe, and on the hypothesis of its having come into existence after not existing, he reasons that its coming into existence entails an agent that brought it into existence. A full demonstration of the existence of God requires that the cause of the universe be shown to be one and incorporeal, and Maimonides establishes the unity and incorporeality of the first cause on both tracks. Of the four demonstrations constructed on the hypothesis of eternity, he marks the one that argues from the motion of the heavens

The sanctity of the Land of Israel and its borders are fundamental concepts in Jewish texts, from the Bible and throughout the rabbinic literature. Nevertheless, Jewish graphical representations of this territory, whether as maps or other geographical illustrations, are both rare and late. An early, virtually unknown map of the Land of Israel, produced by Solomon b. Moses of Chelm (1717–1781), is presented and studied. Solomon, born in Zamośc, served as rabbi in Chelm, where he acquired great renown for his halakhic work Mirkevet ha-misneh (a commentary on Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah ). Ḥug ha- ʾ areṣ (not published until 1988), on the geography of Eretz Israel, is unique in its theme, contents, and especially its dependence on Latin sources. R. Solomon drew freely on Christian van Adrichom’s Theatrum Terrae Sanctae (1590) and on the map printed in Matthaeus Seutter’s Atlas Novus . The discovery that this supposed traditionalist made extensive use of Latin sources for geographical discussions that have a halakhic bearing is significant for our appreciation of an illustrious figure who is venerated in Orthodox circles.

The Meaning of Qohelet According to Ibn Ezra's Scientific Explanations 从伊本·以斯拉的科学解释看小天使的意义

In his commentary on Qohelet, Abraham Ibn Ezra utilizes the theories of Ptolemaic astronomy and astrology, the ideas of earlier Neoplatonic philosophers, and the rules of the Hebrew grammarians of his time to explain the book in general and certain verses in particular. Through these concepts, Ibn Ezra tries to justify Qohelet's thesis that it is useless to occupy oneself with earthly matters, because they are subject to all kinds of external influences, from astrological effects to customs and food habits that depend on geography. The only worthwhile human activity in this world is perfection of the soul through the development of wisdom. Ibn Ezra maintains that the book of Qohelet deals with the laws of nature, although they are not exposed in a clear and obvious manner. The exegete's purpose is to uncover the scientific theories hidden in the biblical text and show that the knowledge provided by the Bible conforms to that provided by the profane sciences. Ibn Ezra uses the philosophical theory of the three souls to solve apparent contradictions in the text of Qohelet.
