In this paper, we present a performance analysis of an integrated voice/data access system in a GSM/GPRS network, where the radio channels are subject to transmission impairments. Circuit-switched GSM voice and packet-switched GPRS data users share the N channels, with priority given to voice. We incorporate transmission impairments by a Markovian two-state channel model, where one state is characterized by a very low BER (good state), and the other by a much higher BER (bad state). The results indicate that the delay performance of the GPRS data users can be drastically affected by the channel impairments

Multiple antenna systems have potential to achieve a high capacity compared to a single antenna system in a Rayleigh fading environment. Layered space time (LST) architecture can attain a tight lower bound on the MIMO channel capacity. In (S. Marinkovic, et al., 2001) it is shown that for LST system, the iterative parallel interference canceller with decision statistics combiner (PIC-DSC) can achieve the performance of minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver. Besides, once partial channel state information is available at transmitter, substantial performance improvement can be attained through allocating power across various transmitting antennas. In this paper, we address the problem of the design of a power allocation strategy for LST architecture with iterative PIC-DSC at receiver. Minimization of bit error rate is employed as the optimization criterion. Convolutional code is used as constituent code. Compared to existing method, the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the conventional LST system

Trading-off computational complexity and quality is an important performance constraint for real time application of motion estimation algorithm. To address this issue, an adaptive-centre diamond search distance dependent thresholding search (ADSDTS) algorithm has been proposed for motion estimation in video coding applications. ADSDTS encompassed both the full search (FS) as well as fast searching modes, with different threshold settings providing various quality-of-service levels. The main drawback of ADSDTS was that the threshold value was manually defined. In this paper, the ADSDTS algorithm has been extended to a fully adaptive centre-prediction diamond-search distance-dependent thresholding search (FACDDTS), a key feature of which is the automatic adaptation of the threshold using the desired target and the content from the actual video sequence, to achieve a guaranteed level of quality or processing complexity. Experimental results confirm the performance of the FACDDTS algorithm in achieving this objective with minimal additional computational cost

Wireless systems are subject to fading-time variations of the receiving conditions caused by multipath propagation and transceiver movements. Prediction of fading allows to 'learn' the channel state information (CSI) in advance and adjust the transmission scheme as required based on the future values of CSI. In this contribution we propose a framework to handle predictions of general fast- and non-flat fading MIMO wireless channels. Unlike current approaches to predict channels by feeding sampled channel impulse response taps into the predictor, we first estimate multipath parameters, such as delay, Doppler frequencies, DoD/DoA, and design predictors for them. This step decreases the rate of variation of the channel thus allowing a greater prediction horizon and simpler predictor designs. The extracted parameters are then tracked over time and multipath gains are predicted using a linear model that is recursively updated. The prediction scheme is applied to the measured MIMO impulse responses to demonstrate the applicability of the method

An analytical formulation of the outage probability in terms of bit error rate specification for video multiclass services in a multi-code direct-sequence ultra-wideband (DS-UWB) system is presented. The analytical framework is formulated for the general case in which different traffic classes have different varying video bit rates. The video model used in this paper accounts for scene changes. In the model, each video source is modeled by a two-dimensional Markov chain. Multiple spreading codes are used by each user to achieve the varying video bit rate. The analytical work leads to the determination of the system capacity admission region of a multi-code DS-UWB system supporting video services. Numerical results of the admission regions are also presented

A hybrid controller for swinging up inverted pendulum system is proposed in this paper. The controller composes of two parts. The first part is the PD position control for swinging up the pendulum from the natural pendent position by moving the cart back and forth until the pendulum swings up around the upright position. The second part is a servo state feedback control designed by LQR which will be switched to stabilize the inverted pendulum in its upright position. The effectiveness and reliability of the proposed hybrid controller for swinging up inverted pendulum on cart are also shown by the experimental results

Report generation is arguably the most important task for Web-based database applications, since dynamic Web pages consisting of database reports are essential to almost every transaction. When a report is generated, the layout of the data sources must be converted to the layout of the report. In this paper, we propose a report-structure tree to model the layout of nested reports. A series of tree nodes are used to define the structure of reports, produce nested results, and offer aggregation functions. We enhance our previous work (TPS) to support the design of report-structure trees visually. We show that sophisticated nested reports can be created easily

For multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems, if perfect channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter and receiver sides, advanced beamforming (ABF) can be applied at both sides so that the transmitted data streams can be decoupled easily, and adaptive modulation can be utilized to maximize the throughput. When the available CSI is imperfect, however, the data streams cannot be decoupled completely with linear receive beamforming. In this paper, a dynamic QR decomposition based M-Algorithm (QRDM receiver) is proposed for recovering the data streams delivered by MIMO beamforming systems with adaptive modulation designed by imperfect CSI. We also propose a scheme to determine the decoding order for assisting the QRDM operation. The proposed schemes can also be applied to multiuser MIMO systems with random transmit beamforming where the random beams are hardly match the desired user's CSI exactly. Computer simulations have shown that the proposed receiver is very robust to the CSI mismatch as compared to conventional linear receivers

The support vector clustering (SVC) algorithm was introduced to get the number of the pinnacles in the result of the time-frequency analysis and Radon transform of the multicomponent linear FM (LFM) signal, and to fulfil the detection of the components of the LFM signal. Meanwhile, an approach called near zero mean, for reducing the point number of the input data-set for SVC, was proposed to improve the computation efficiency. And a novel cluster labeling method was developed to improve the SVC algorithm. The simulation results depict that the SVC-radon-time-frequency approach is efficient for the detection and parameter estimation of the multi-components LFM signal
