Purpose: The number of older adults with dementia who reside in long-term care institutions has significantly grown. When older adults with dementia are institutionalized, their spouses, who were providing care at home, may experience chronic mental health conditions. This study examined and compared the mental health status of older adults who institutionalized their spouses with dementia in long-term care institutions versus that of older adults who reside with their spouses in their homes.Methods: The analysis included 95 spouses of institutionalized individuals and 285 control group participants, drawn from 63,617 participants of the 2018 Korean Community Health Survey.Results: The results showed that the spouses of institutionalized individuals with dementia had more depressive symptoms, poorer sleep quality, and experienced greater stress than those in the control group.Conclusion: It is necessary to provide supportive care, for alleviating depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality, and stress, to individuals whose spouses are residing in long-term care facilities. For a spouse caregiver, navigation help and education on the changing roles after an older adult’s admission to a long-term care facility would be necessary.

Purpose: Psychiatric nurses lack experience caring for patients with acute physical illnesses. Notably, they are expected to have experienced burnout when they were taking care of mentally ill patients infected with COVID-19. This study aimed to determine the impact of infection control knowledge, emergency nursing competency, and infection prevention environment on burnout.Methods: This survey was conducted on 127 psychiatric nurses from February to March 2023 using a structured self-report questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed through multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 28.0 program.Results: The subject's burnout score was 2.83 out of 5, infection control knowledge was 0.69 out of 1, emergency nursing competency was 2.80 out of 4, and infection prevention environment was 3.83 out of 5. Regression analysis showed infection control knowledge (β=-.17, p=.048) and nurses’ self-perceived efficacy in responding to an emergency (β=.26, p=.002) were factors affecting burnout, and the explanatory power for burnout was 9% (F=7.22, p<.001).Conclusion: Based on these results, we believe that infection control is needed. In addition, rather than simply providing education to increase nurses' emergency nursing competence, educational measures are needed to increase nurses' sense of efficacy in responding to emergencies.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the process of adapting to daily life after discharge of self-injury adolescents and to develop a substantive theory that can explain their experiences. Methods: Data collection and analysis were conducted through interviews with 9 participants who returned to their daily life after discharge, and data analysis was conducted according to the grounded theory approach. Results: As a result of the analysis, a total of 31 concepts and 9 categories were derived, and were classified into the areas of conditions, actions-interactions, and consequences according to the grounded theory paradigm. As a core category that can explain all these concepts and categories, ‘balance oneself in a precarious daily life’ was derived. Conclusion: In this study, a theory in which this process was composed in the order of return stage, crisis stage, and transformative stage, was presented. Finally, the discussions and suggestions of this study based on these results were described.

Finally, the discussions and suggestions of this study based on these results were described.","PeriodicalId":427945,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing","volume":" 1169","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139136177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Purpose: We evaluated the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (K-PBQ) among Korean parents with children under 12 months of age.Methods: The K-PBQ was translated considering Korean cultural validity through translation, back-translation, and expert panel review. Construct validity was tested by conducting both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with data from 308 couples (N=616). Convergent and discriminant validity were performed using correlations between the K-PBQ and instruments measuring the concepts of attachment, postnatal depression, and dyadic adjustment. The reliability of the K-PBQ was calculated using Cronbach’s ⍺ coefficients.Results: EFA revealed that the 25-item K-PBQ was composed of two factors: impaired bonding (17 items) and the burden of infant care (8 items). The results of the final model fit were acceptable. Known-group validity showed that the K-PBQ score of the postnatal depressed group was significantly higher than that of the non-depressed group. The Cronbach’s ⍺ of the K-PBQ was .95.Conclusion: The K-PBQ was verified as a valid and reliable scale to measure postpartum bonding among parents with children under 12 months of age in Korea. It may contribute to facilitating further research on parent-infant bonding.
