Talking Out of Revolution: Henri Krasucki and Jacques Chirac’s Secret Pigalle Negotiations and the Resolution of the French General Strike of May–June

At the height of the French general strike of May-June 1968, the future President Jacques Chirac, then Secretary of State for Employment, initiated at least one secret meeting with Henri Krasucki, deputy General Secretary of the Communist-led trade union confederation, the Confederation generale du travail (CGT). As one of the few aspects of the events of May to remain comparatively untouched by serious historical work, the present article seeks to rectify this anomaly, peeling apart the various competing layers of memory around the Chirac-Krasucki negotiations to explore the paradoxes of this encounter, placing them in a wider historical and memorial context. Light will thereby be shed on how two very different men sought, with a surprising degree of success, to cross the profound political, class and Cold War lines that lay between them.

The General Strike as a Weapon of Peace: British Socialists, the Labour Movement, and Debating the Means to Avoid War before 1914 《作为和平武器的总罢工:1914年前英国社会主义者、劳工运动和避免战争的辩论》

As tensions grew and the prospect of war seemed ever more likely in the years preceding 1914, Europe's socialists regularly debated the means to avoid war. Many options were open to them, with this article focusing on one of the most radical, the general strike. The debate at the Second International is much discussed, but there has been little attention paid to the domestic debates, especially in Britain. This article redresses this, outlining the domestic dialogue and examining the different opinions voiced on this weapon of peace. In doing so, it demonstrates how important the domestic context was to the debate, and how tensions within the labour and socialist movement profoundly influenced both the supporters and opponents of the strike. It argues that many genuinely believed in the potential of the strike and would continue to post war, while acknowledging that many others, conditioned by recent labour unrest and political concerns, questioned such faith. This was an important debate that as well as highlighting labour and socialist responses to war also reveals much about the challenges a developing Labour Party faced, the negotiation of Labour policy and question over direct action as an effective tactic for the labour movement.

Charles Stubbs (1845–1912) was the most senior Anglican clergyman to engage supportively with the labour movement in the decades before the Great War. From a curacy in Sheffield during the 1860s he rose to become first Dean of Ely (from 1894) and then Bishop of Truro (from 1906 until his death). The titles of some of his many books give a good flavour of their author: Village Politics: Addresses and Sermons on the Labour Question; The Land and the Labourers (five editions, 1885–1904); Christ and Economics; A Creed for Christian Socialists. An early member of the Guild of St Matthew, a small but influential Christian socialist society founded in 1877 ‘to justify God to the people’, Stubbs was a powerful influence on an important but neglected facet of Christian socialism, one that was ‘Broad Church’ rather than Anglo-Catholic. He was also widely admired in progressive liberal and trade unionist circles for his practical involvement in campaigns in support of land reform, rural renewal, and agricultural labour. This article analyses his thinking about the ‘social witness’ of Christianity, arguing it was an important bridge between the theology of the mid-Victorian socialist F.D. Maurice and post-First World War Christian socialism.
