In the digital era, the publication industry talks more about e-books utility across the world. But in the Indian scenario, usage of e-books is predominantly low compared with other developed countries. The publisher's strategies like control over e-books platform, licencing and other legal issues are pushing back libraries from the procurement of e-books. This article makes a modest attempt to describe the conceptual framework, advantages, disadvantages, usage, legal issues, access models and licencing pertaining to e-books procurement.

Transformed data presented in a meaningful way for users is information, whereas knowledge is the capability for actionable information. Knowledge sharing is among the major goals of academic communities, and therefore, the emphasis on knowledge sharing and management is the central issue for the academic libraries. It includes the process of identification, retrieval and potential utilization of knowledge to help the end-users at the times of their need. Portals render support to this knowledge management (KM) process. Knowledge portal or web portal is designed to support KM, and it facilitates transfer, storage, retrieval, creation, integration and application of knowledge in academic institutions. Libraries are the repositories of all forms of information resources for the knowledge base that supports academic curricula. A web portal with an appropriate link to the required information resources is an important tool for KM. This article discuss the web portal as a KM tool in academic libraries and outlines a design for a simple web portal with Hyper Text Markup Language to manage the resources of a library attached to academic institutions like school, college and university libraries.

This paper presents the use pattern of various web information resources by the visually challenged students. The category of students encompasses the students studying in the higher educational institutions in the state of Karnataka. The students who are pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses are covered here. Of late, many important sources of information are made available online and hence the users develop the trend of accessing information sources on the web. Therefore, students and researchers who are studying in colleges and universities have developed the habit of accessing e-books, e-journals, e-theses, online databases, current information/events and proceedings of seminars and conferences on the web. This paper deals with the extent of the use of various e-resources by the visually challenged students. Pragmatic and useful recommendations are provided as the outcome of the study.

Present study is an attempt to understand the use of e-resources by the academia at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysore. The sample consists of faculty members, research scholars, and student of AIISH, Mysore. A total of 150 members of the library were surveyed with a response rate of 80%. Different aspects of e-resources like use of e-databases, e-journals, Open Access Public Catalogue and the Internet by the academic community were examined and the results relating to that are reported here. The main objectives are: availability, access and impact of e-resources; frequency of use of e-resources; use of e-databases and e-journals; OPAC and Internet. The results shown here are descriptive and tables are very few. Some of the highlights of the study are: sample is 120/150. Methodology is questionnaire with Liker's scale. Large users (56) were in the range of 21–25 years of age. Nearly, 24.16% of respondents are specialised in speech and hearing. E-journals (mean=1.40) and e-databases (mean=0.80) are extensively used. Web Crawler (mean=0.33) is the most frequently used Meta search engine. The positive impact is ‘Access to current/up-to-date information’ (mean =1.60). The negative impact is too much of information is available (mean=1.40).
Web Crawler(均值=0.33)是最常用的元搜索引擎。积极影响是“获取当前/最新信息”(平均值=1.60)。负面影响是可用信息太多(平均值=1.40)。

Knowledge Management in Libraries 图书馆知识管理

Knowledge means the data and information are insights and context of the mind. It may be viewed as the cumulative effect of a lifetime of insight, intuition, context, experience and wisdom. Knowledge management means “knowing what you know and profiting from it”. (Built upon computational logic and based on memory). It can also be explained as “doing the right thing” as opposed to “doing things right”. Knowledge management can be classified into two types 1) Codified or explicit knowledge, which can be written down, transferred and shared and this can be protected under a legal mechanism. 2) Tacit knowledge or “know-how”, which is, by nature, more difficult to describe as it can be demonstrated but not codified. Knowledge Management in the library called as “the strategies and process of identifying, capturing, and leveraging knowledge to help the assessor at the right time”. Both intellectual capital and knowledge management have come to be the two strongly emerging themes in today's emerging world. From these perspectives the digital libraries prove that a society based on knowledge and learning is critical.

User satisfaction is the main aim of an academic library. This paper reports a part of a quantitative study that aims to evaluate the performance of libraries by measuring the users’ satisfaction with (a) library services, (b) library electronic resources and (c) satisfaction with print and electronic services provided by the Kakatiya University (KU) library. A self-developed questionnaire was used to gauge the respondents’ opinions about their satisfaction level on the statements regarding the three dimensions. The questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 220 students and research scholars from three faculties of the university, out of those 178 questionnaires were taken for study.
