A multi-stage fiber-grating coupler design is evolved from random conditions, fabricated, and tested on a silicon platform. Simultaneous input/output coupling from a standard fiber array at perfectly normal incidence yields a 59.8% efficiency per grating.

We analytically derive the energy-bandwidth limit for electro-optic modulators based on intra-cavity index modulation, and propose a dual cavity modulator using coupling modulation to simultaneously achieve high bandwidth (80 GHz) and ultra-low energy-per-bit (0.26 aJ).

We present a new method for active control of optical micro-resonator modulator and filter wavelength that is insensitive to environmental and optical perturbations and readily integrated on-chip. Experimental results demonstrating precise, long-term filter locking are shown.

Silicon photonics offers potentially enormous interchip bandwidth density. We discuss several circuit design issues, often overlooked, central to their implementation: thermal stability/control, DC-tracking, circuit calibration, and loss optimization, and how they affect system considerations.

A coherent receiver based on silicon photonics is presented. Its performance is confirmed at 112 Gb/s with PM-QPSK modulation at 28 Gbaud up to 4800 km and at 224 Gb/s with PM-16QAM up to 640 km. The packaged core has very compact dimensions of 6mm×8mm.
