Mediators of Gender Wage Disparity in MFT Academia MFT

ABSTRACT Research on gender wage disparity in MFT academia finds women are consistently paid less than men faculty members. This study expands on previous research by testing if peer-reviewed publications and years in the field mediate the effect that faculty members' gender has on salary. Our results support these factors as significant parallel mediators, meaning the effect of a faculty member’s gender on salary, happens byway of peer-reviewed publications and time in the field. No direct effect was found between gender and salary, indicating that gender differences in salary are best explained though indirect pathways of implicit gender bias rather than conscious acts of gender discrimination. Implications are discussed for university administrators wanting to address salary inequities in their MFT programs.

ABSTRACT Historically, there has been a significant overlap between religion, family, and work. The aim of this study was to employ qualitative analysis techniques to explore the narratives of women’s identities within these three domains. The present study included eight semi-structured interviews to understand the work, family, and church experiences of white, cis-gender women who worked in higher education and affiliated with a Christian denomination. A phenomenological approach was utilized, and open coding generated the overarching themes and subthemes. The results of the present study support the difficulty of balancing multiple and sometimes contradictory roles, expectations, values, and beliefs that women face. The intersection between religion, work, family, and psychological processes is evident in the narratives of these participants. Practical implications are explored relating to the gendered roles and dissonance women experience and the theological importance of developing responsible biblical lenses for interpretation that incorporate feminist realities.

Women Veterans after Transition to Civilian Life: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

ABSTRACT Women are important contributors in the United States military yet historically struggle for equality and equity. As women’s military service increases, literature has failed to keep up with the changes which affect women service members and veterans, especially civilian life transitions. Through a feminist framework, the current study explored the experiences of four women veterans who transitioned to civilian life utilizing interpretative phenomenological analysis to analyze semi-structured interviews. Connected by gender, seven superordinate themes emerged: family support, mandatory conformity, identity, service, gender inequality, symptoms, and opportunities. The findings indicated that military life and transition negatively impacted these women veterans’ mental, physical, and social well-being. In contribution to the gap in current literature, the authors discuss implications for research, clinicians, society, and the military.

ABSTRACT Research on self-compassion has focused on implementing psychoeducation and experiential exercises to groups with the goal of increasing individuals’ self-kindness, mindfulness, and sense of shared humanity. This study addressed how implementing a self-compassionate intervention in individual psychotherapy influences a woman’s self-compassion and romantic relationship satisfaction. The researcher used case study notes and assessments with four females who received a self-compassionate intervention over five 45-min sessions. All participants reported an increase in self-compassion during the intervention. Participants also verbalized improvement to their romantic relationship satisfaction, confirmed in 75% of the participants’ assessments. The women predominantly cited experiencing change in their evaluated perception of their relationship during and after the intervention, despite a lack of change in their partner.

ABSTRACT The current political climate and larger systemic context have impacted crimes and discrimination against Latinxs in the United States. Stigmatizing rhetoric and policies not only impact those who they are targeting but can also have an impact on biases held by clinicians. To counteract these sociopolitical effects, we highlight the strengths of various Latinx cultural values of faith and religion, familismo, machismo, cabellerismo, and independence. We provide therapists with ways to apply cultural values theory and a strength-based approach with Latinx clients. As therapists focus on the strengths cultural values bring and utilize the values and beliefs of Latinx families, they can provide more sensitive care.

ABSTRACT In this article, we examine the experiences of the characters in A Tale of Three Sisters movie from the critically informed family therapy perspective. The movie points out power imbalances in both relationships and the larger societal context within the scope of intersectionality of gender, social class, and geography. The reflections of a patriarchal social order manifest themselves in the “domestic servant” status of the three sisters. After a historical view on domestic servitude of children in Turkey, we discuss the movie by using the concepts of critically informed family therapy, and then provide culturally sensitive clinical recommendations.
