Light is an essential and powerful element to animals. A light-emitting diode (LED) is most efficient in terms of economic benefits. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of LED lighting time on milk production, milk composition, and the immune response of Holstein cows. Forty lactating cows were assigned to four experimental groups: control; natural daylight, treatment; am3-6, pm6-12 and pm6-am6. We found that there was no significant effect on the decrease ratio in milk production among the groups. Milk urea nitrogen (MUN) was significantly decreased in pm6-am6 and pm6-12 than the control. With regard to the hemolytic biochemical analysis, GLU was significantly increased and CRE, T-BIL were significantly decreased in the pm6-12 than the control. IGF-1 levels were significantly increased in pm6-12 compared to other groups. Besides, cortisol was significantly lowered in the pm6-12 than the control, while prolactin, IgA and IgG were not significant among the groups. In addition, catalase and glutathione peroxidase were also significantly increased in pm6-12 than the control. However, antioxidant enzyme activity and superoxide dismutase were not significant among the experimental groups. Therefore, it was concluded that LED lighting time had some impact on blood parameters and immune responses in dairy cows without any changes in milk production.

This study was conducted to compare the mortality number of swine between before and after HACCP implementation on different scales of swine farm. The study was carried out by randomly selected sixty swine farms (twenty small, twenty midium and twenty large scales of farm) located in all around Korea. The results were as follows: In small scale swine farm, The mortality number due to respiratory, diarrhea and accidental death tended to be decreased compared to before HACCP implementation. In the case medium scale farm, the mortality number due to diarrhea significantly decreased after HACCP compared to before HACCP. Also, in both medium and large scale farms, the number of total mortality number significantly decreased with HACCP implementation. We believe that this effect is considered to be due to the operation of the HACCP prerequisite program. We are expecting that our results might be used for producing safer livestock products by improving livestock products HACCP policy.

This study was carried out to determine whether cage traps can be used to capture wild boars successfully, and to assess their response to different bait materials and the number of wild boars caught. Steel cage-traps (4.0 m × 1.5 m × 1.2 m, L × W × H) were installed at two sites in Damyang County and at one site in Sunchang County, South Korea. To identify preferred bait-diet, baits were prepared with dry corn and fermented sour corn and placed in equal amounts at the sites close to wild boar pads at 200 m intervals. Before selecting trap locations where sufficient activity was observed, pre-baiting was undertaken and steel-framed traps were installed with gates open. Preference for bait materials was not clearly defined. After providing the bait for the first time, the number of days until wild boars ate all the food were counted. In the Damyang and Youngam areas, where hunting was allowed, total bait consumption took 6 to 12 days; in contrast, in the Sunchang area, where no hunting took place, total food consumption took only 5 days. In addition, after pre-baiting with the mixture of dry and sour corn for diet for about 8.7 days and then opening the trap gates for 3 more days, 13.7 days were necessary to catch 4.3 wild boars per trap. These results suggest that hunting intensity around trapping places was an important factor in determining the success of the traps.
