Complex freshwater-saltwater exchanges characterize Holocene aquifers in low- lying coastal plains, such as the phreatic aquifer at the southern margin of the Venice Lagoon, object of this study. This is due to the contribution of several factors that control groundwater dynamics, including the high variability of Holocene coastal deposits and water management practices. The stratigraphic architecture of the coastal area at the southern front of the Venice Lagoon consists of sandy paleochannels and littoral ridges and fine lagoon sediments. The relationships between the sedimentary deposits and vertical changes in salinization of the phreatic aquifer are poorly studied, although they are of paramount importance for the sustainable use of water resources. This work is aimed to demonstrate the influence of morpho-sedimentary constraints (i.e. stratigraphic discontinuities) on the salt- fresh water dynamics of the salt contaminated aquifer at the southern margin of the Venice Lagoon. The adopted methodology is based on the comparison between stratigraphic logs (in terms of Facies Analyses) and Electro Conductivity profiles (in which the EC has been taken as a proxy of salinity) acquired into the aquifer. The results show that buried channelized sandy deposits can reduce the salinity of the phreatic aquiferwhen a sufficient freswater supply is simultaneously present.

Numerous geological risks characterise urban areas, one of the most undervalued of which is the sinkhole risk connected to underground cavities. In the Lazio Region, the subsoil of many beautiful art cities like Rieti and Viterbo is rich in underground cavities, mainly anthropogenic because of their thousand-year history and the geological substrate’s peculiar characteristics. These cavities have very different ages and types, the oldest dates back to the Etruscan and Archaic times. However, their excavation continued uninterrupted during the Roman and Medieval times until the Second World War, when many were readapted as bomb shelters. An interdisciplinary approach that combines geological and geotechnical aspects integrated by geophysics with historical and archaeological data in a GIS project can allow an efficient census of these cavities, defining not only their morphology and their functions but also hypothesising their continuation in unexplored or collapsed traits. Such a census is indispensable to estimate and, therefore, mitigate the sinkhole’s risk and better define risk, including the seismic response of a subsoil articulated and altered by many levels of underground cavities.

An application of the Null-Space Monte Carlo (NSMC) method is presented for the evaluation of exposure to contamination of two aqueduct well fields located in Vara-Magra Valley (La Spezia) on the right (FRX) and left riverbank (FLX). The study involved the implementation of a MODFLOW model, and the next optimization of permeability parameters by assimilating the hydraulic head records collected. The optimization of the parameters was carried out using PEST adopting a high parameterization approach using pilot points and Tikhonov regularizations. Using the NSMC method, a set of permeability realizations was generated and employed to simulate an accidental pollution spill through a particle tracking algorithm, in a point located on the right bank side about 1800 meters upstream from the FLX well field. The results show that the FRX well field is the relatively most exposed target, being reached by contamination in 48% of the simulations, while Magra River and FLX well field were exposed to contamination in 42% and 9% of the simulations, respectively.

Drawing inspiration from the geomorphological analysis of available topographic maps integrated with the analysis of satellite imagery (Landsat) and orthophotos, a study of the geomorphological changes experienced by the channel of the lower reach of the Volturno River during the period 1875-2020 was performed. The observed geometric variations of the channel mainly fall in the floodplain i.e., they are limited to the area of meandering. To quantify these variations, some specific morphometric parameters such as length (L), mean width (W) and sinuosity index (SI) of the channel were measured. The main morphological changes observed consist of a phase of severe narrowing of the channel, which occurred between the 1929 and the 1954, and a reduction in length that occurred between the 1984 and the 2020. The data obtained are in line with those reported in the literature by other authors who have identified precise temporal phases in which these variations occurred and the possible causes, mainly anthropogenic, that led to them. In addition, the analysis of the existing bibliography together with the study of satellite imagery revealed important variations also in the different land use in the same study area that are probably compatible with the geometric variations of the channel. The changes in land use found between the 1984 and the 2020 can certainly be attributed to the significant increase in urbanized areas and water bodies at the expense of agricultural areas.

Background Values (BVs) of diffuse pollutants in groundwater represent a very important information for the correct comprehension of contaminant phenomena and constitute an operative tool for local authorities. The aim of the study is to highlight the Background Values (BVs) differences between the use of local or regional data in the same sector in the Piedmont plain shallow aquifer considering different chemical parameters. More specifically, chlorinated solvents and nickel were considered at a local and provincial scale in the Metropolitan City of Turin. The concentrations data of the chemicals derived from the Regional Monitoring network (RMRAS) for the Metropolitan City of Turin and from local analyzes of Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPA Piemonte) in the local site. The use of the RMRAS monitoring points was resulted inappropriate to define BVs in groundwater due to the low density of monitoring wells. On the contrary, the analyzes in the local study area made it possible to understand and characterize correctly numerous specific aspects, recognizing the diffuse pollution and identifying new potential punctual contamination. In conclusion, the study made it possible to define the BVs in groundwater at a local scale and to propose possible improvements of analysis methodology.
