Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae (VC) serogroups O1 and O139. Transmission is oro-faecal and it might lead to acute dehydration. The disease is still endemic in resource-poor countries, nevertheless importation cases are occasionally reported in developed countries. The paper reports a case of a 3-year-old boy admitted to the emergency room because of acute gastroenteritis with rice-water stools. Faecal samples were positive for VC. The child was managed with prompt parenteral crystalloid infusion, followed by oral rehydration solution. After a single dose of azythromicin, a progressive reduction in symptoms was documented. Cholera infection is then briefly reviewed.

We report the case of a 13-year-old girl who suffered of complicated appendicitis, treated by laparoscopic appendectomy, who then develops a bilateral pleural effusion, requiring a chest drain. Pleural exudative effusion is a rare complication of perforated appendicitis; it’s caused by irritation of the diaphragm and by the passage of liquids from the abdominal cavity to the thoracic one, favored by pneumoperitoneum and Trendelenburg position.

Drowning is defined as the process of experiencing respiratory distress as a result of a mechanical asphyxiation due to the entry of a liquid into the lungs. It is a pretty common phenomenon, especially in early childhood and adolescence, although characterized by different risk factors by age. The pivotal management of a patient with drowning syndrome is first aid following the Paediatric Basic/Advanced Life Support principles, which should be carried out as soon as possible. The following manage- ment depends on the patient's signs and symptoms (secondary evaluation) and on the accident dynamic. Education is pivotal to prevent the incidence of drowning. Health education about drowning mainly focuses on the potential risk factors associated with aquatic entertainment for children, and therefore on the use of multiple layers of safety barriers, either physical (pool fencing, pool covers or water entry alarms) or behavioural.
