ABSTRACTThis contribution presents interdisciplinary research on charcoal hearth remains carried out at Poggio di Montieri, Central Italy, a hill heavily exploited in the Middle Ages for the extraction of silver-bearing ore, and then managed until the nineteenth century with a multiple land use system based on pasture. Linking together pedological and archaeological surveys with anthracological, dendro-anthracological and chemical analyses, as well as with information from historical texts and maps, this research outlines the environmental dynamics that occurred in this area in the last few centuries. Although ore processing undoubtedly required large quantities of charcoal as fuel, no evidence of charcoal hearth remains from the Middle Ages have been found, while at least two charcoal production phases, starting from the seventeenth century, were individuated. Despite an increase in charcoal production at the end of the last phase, in the eighteenth–nineteenth centuries, no over-exploitation of the forest resources at Poggio di Montieri was documented. The lack of such an expected over-exploitation could be due to the use of wood from pruning and shredding, which allowed the sustainable management of the forest resource and was the legacy of the multiple land use systems of previous centuries.KEYWORDS: pedologydendro-anthracologyforest soilhistorical ecologycharcoal kilnstopographic analysis Disclosure StatementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Additional informationFundingThe author GM has benefited a Marie-Curie COFUND postdoctoral fellowship, co-founded by the European Commission and the University of Liege (ref. number: 600405). PesciniV。 CertiniG。 MastrolonardoG。

Plant use of the Corded Ware Culture (2800–2000 cal BC) communities in Estonia and more broadly in the eastern Baltic area has not been systematically studied using archaeobotanical methods. This article presents the first archaeobotanical study from a Stone Age context in Estonia, and discusses plant use at the Corded Ware Culture settlement and burial site of Narva-Jõesuu IIB in the north-eastern part of the country. Analysis revealed the first occurrence of water chestnut (Trapa natans) from a Stone Age context in Estonia and numerous common hazel (Corylus avellana) nutshells. Otherwise, the plant material preserved in the sandy soils of Narva-Jõesuu IIB consisted of charred remains of conifers and heathland species, as well as plants from scrubs or forest edges. The plant species that were found reflect the mosaic nature of the environment surrounding the site. Only wild plants were gathered and used at Narva-Jõesuu IIB; no domesticated plants or signs of plant cultivation were identified.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the ancient water collection and storage systems near the Karahantepe Neolithic Site, located 500 m to the north, utilising unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The utilisation of DEM allowed for the examination of the cisterns, pools, and channels in the region. The hydrological analysis gave a comprehensive understanding of the water flow patterns. The findings showed that the channels leading to the cisterns followed a meandering slope and culminated in pools, which could be sedimentation ponds. The study emphasised the benefit of utilising UAV technology in archaeology and inferred that the water collection and storage system in the region was deliberately constructed by ancient civilisations.
