Dignitas Infinita: A Syllabus of Errors for the 21st Century? Dignitas Infinita:21
Pub Date : 2024-07-26 DOI: 10.55476/001c.121936
Bernard V. Brady
The Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith’s declaration Dignitas Infinita states two primary purposes: to clarify the meaning of dignity and condemn violations of dignity. Human dignity has come to be a “brand” of Catholic morality and the word has had several meanings. The first task is creative and constructive and offers a narrative on the development of the church’s moral teaching. The Dicastery offers “a fourfold distinction of the concept of dignity.” The second, a list of actions and practices that violate dignity, is a collection of statements from the Vatican. This essay argues that three of the four understandings of dignity are helpful in addressing social issues and that the central idea of the text, ontological dignity, is not developed and pushed through to its conclusions. The essay questions the listing of the “grave violations of human dignity” not seeing correlation and causation between them, condemning without offering ways of responding, and seemingly stating a moral equivalence among them.

Introduction: Complex Situations
Pub Date : 2024-07-26 DOI: 10.55476/001c.121958
M. T. Lysaught
The articles in the July 2024 issue of the Journal of Moral Theology bring to the fore a series of anomalies for Catholic moral theology or, as one might call them, complex situations. These complex situations highlight Pope Francis’s constant maxim that reality is greater than ideas. These very realities inform his methodological vision for theology articulated in Ad Theologiam Promovendam, which itself provides a roadmap for Catholic moral theology moving forward. Only such a method—synodal, contextual, transdisciplinary, sacramental, and (in)formed by caritas—understands that what is foundational are not abstract philosophical principles but rather the necessarily complex realities of creation, human life and, therefore, the Christian moral life.

Catholic Anthropology beyond Compulsory Sexuality
Pub Date : 2024-07-26 DOI: 10.55476/001c.121939
Jessica Coblentz
Drawing from asexual experience and theory, this essay demonstrates how many Catholic magisterial and progressive theological accounts of the human person mask the realities of asexuality by reflecting and perpetuating compulsory sexuality. To correct this oversight and move Catholic theological anthropologies beyond compulsory sexuality, the author explores underappreciated dimensions of human life that often feature more prominently among asexual persons because of their asexuality. This reflection shows asexuality to be a fecund resource for expanding theological reflection on human relationship to the more-than-human world, to other humans, and to God.

Distortions of Normativity in the Church’s Sexual Abuse Scandal: The Role of Moral Theology
Pub Date : 2024-07-26 DOI: 10.55476/001c.121943
B. Prusak
This essay considers how distortions of normativity figured in the church’s sexual abuse scandal. The focus falls in particular on how the social articulation of morality may go awry and on the ways this happened in the church. The essay reviews work by psychologist Marie Keenan, philosophers Herlinde Pauer-Studer and J. David Velleman, and theologian Norbert J. Rigali, SJ. Rigali draws attention to the role of traditional moral theology in shaping the moral perception of clergy. According to him, “The content, structure, and method of [this] sin-centered discipline…shaped the way in which the Christian moral life was understood in the Church.” His primary evidence for that thesis is the way the sexual abuse of children was perceived by clergy, in particular bishops, prior to 2002. As a rule, the victims fell out of the picture. Against that background, the essay submits that the roots of the scandal lie not in moral relativism, but in a moral blindness induced, ironically, by a distorted view of the moral life.

Cultivating a Lifelong Commitment to Social Justice: A Quantitative Analysis
Pub Date : 2024-07-26 DOI: 10.55476/001c.121942
Sean T. Lansing
Leaders with a personal and professional commitment to social justice are necessary to meet the demands of the complex systems and structures that perpetuate marginalization and oppression. The purpose of this study was to better understand common experiences people perceived as influential on their commitment to social justice. The study was designed to quantitatively measure the perceived influence of five variables determined by qualitative research on the development of a social justice orientation. These variables were the influence of significant persons, exposure to injustice, education/learning, work experience, and religion/spirituality. The study found that all five variables are considered influential to personal and professional commitment to social justice using multiple statistical analyses. Other findings include race, level of education, age, and involvement in a religious tradition impacting the perception of influence of different variables as well as working with marginalized populations or experiencing marginalization. These findings have several implications for cultivating commitment to social justice across various disciplines. This article explores implications of these findings for the Catholic community of faith, with a view to generating high impact formation experiences that will foster lifelong commitment to social justice as an expression of Catholic faith.
