Anatomical and chemical modifications in the wood of specimens of trees of La Plata city (Buenos Aires) caused by Laetiporus sulphureus (Basidiomycota, Polyporales). L. sulphureus is an important pathogen causing brown rot in urban trees worldwide. In La Plata city, this fungus was found in specimens of white poplar, green ash, eucalyptus and chinaberry. The objective of this study was to analyze the structural and chemical alterations caused by L. sulphureus in white poplar, green ash, eucalyptus and chinaberry in order to contribute to the diagnosis of the risk that implies their deterioration for inhabitants, their goods and tree diversity in the city. Anatomical studies were performed using light and scanning electron microscopes. Chemical analyses were carried out on samples of green ash and chinaberry, according to TAPPI standards. In all instances the damage was located in the heartwood, showing typical characteristics of advanced stages of brown rot decay. For each species specific alterations at the anatomical and chemical levels were registered, compatible with their structural differences. This is the first regional contribution on the type and degree of deterioration recorded in species naturally affected by L. sulphureus, useful for understanding the risks involved in the urban context.

Morphological variability of the nanoplanktonic diatom Thalassiosira laevis from coastal waters of Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Despite the fact that the genus Thalassiosira was previous and extensively studied including ultrastructural analysis of species found in phytoplanktonic samples collected from marine waters of Argentina, nanoplanktonic species have been frequently overlooked. This paper is devoted to show the morphological variation of Thalassiosira laevis, a nanoplanktonic species collected from marine coastal waters of the Province of Buenos Aires, to compare Argentinean material with those from China, Korea and Brazil described in the literature, and to record it for the first time from Argentina.

Development of native and exotic woody species in the Patagonian cypress forests. The growth and architecture of forest-dwelling woody plants affect the dynamics of these communities. The present study was aimed at improving our understanding of the dynamics of Argentinean Austrocedrus chilensis forests through the study of length growth and architecture of some of the most frequent native and exotic woody species in these communities (natives: Aristotelia chilensis, Berberis microphylla, Lomatia hirsuta, Maytenus boaria, Myoschilos oblongum and Schinus patagonicus; exotics: Juniperus communis, Prunus avium, Pseudotsuga menziesii and Rosa rubiginosa). During the study period (20122014), the length growth of the main axis was not necessarily related to the height growth of labeled plants. Reductions in height were found for individuals of all species but P. menziesii and P. avium, which are exotics in Patagonia. The majority of plants presented notable deviations of the main axis from the vertical; the extent of this deviation was negatively correlated with both the length of the distal main-axis shoot and the height variation of the plant. The species under survey may be categorized in four functional groups according to their architecture. The invasion of these cypress forests by exotic species such as P. menziesii y P. avium, which belong to functional groups different from those of the most frequent coexisting native species, may promote the competitive replacement of native species by exotic species.

Modificaciones histológicas foliares causadas por organismos fúngicos en tres especies de Myrtaceae.

Histological changes in leaves caused by fungi in three species of Myrtaceae. The family Myrtaceae is one of the largest in Argentina. In the province of Tucuman, eleven native species inhabit, three of them, Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Kunth) O. Berg, Eugenia uniflora L. and Myrcianthes pungens (O. Berg) D. Legrand have medicinal, alimentary and forestry importance. Information about fungal species and histological foliar changes produced by them is limited. So the objective of this research is to identify the species of fungi present in leaves of these three tree species; and evaluate the anatomical changes caused by the presence of them. Conventional techniques and stains were used. Twelve fungal species were identified in the three arboreal hosts studied. Ten species were cited for the first time for Argentina. Puccinia psidii and Alternaria sp. were found more frequently. The most affected leaf tissues were the palisade and spongy parenchyma. The most significant lesion was that one observed in the leaf of E. uniflora, it was produced by Microsphaerospis arundinis. Fungal identified species increases the knowledge of the diversity of fungi associated with leaves in native tree species from province of Tucuman.

In addition, a map showing the distribution based on their records in the Neotropics is presented.

The papilionoid genus Stylosanthes Sw. includes about 50 spp. distributed world wide in the tropics, approximately half of them grow in South America.The present study focuses on South American Stylosanthes. Based on examinations of herbarium specimens, as well as field observations, a total of 25 taxa (23 spp. and 2 varieties) are here described and identified with a key. Most of the species have been found to be more widely distributed than expected from the previous taxonomic literature, and the genus appears to be mainly concentrated in Brazil and Paraguay. Stylosanthes leiocarpa Vogel is new to the flora of Argentina and the presence of S. nervosa J. F. Macbr. is confirmed in Argentina. The nomenclature of S. guianensis (Aubl.) Sw. is analyzed. Clarifications are made about nine recently described Brazilian species. The names S. hispida Rich. and S. longiseta Micheli are resurrected. Lectotypes or neotypes for eight species and 18 new synonyms are proposed.

Micropropagation efficiency determination of cassava (Manihot esculenta, Euphorbiaceae) genotypes of interest to the Northeast of Argentina. In vitro cassava propagation has been reported in numerous studies; however, the efficiency of multiplication had only been established in a very restricted number of cultivars and / or subcultures during micropropagation. In order to evaluate the in vitro multiplication of 20 economically important cassava cultivars of Northeast Argentina (six total subcultures performed every 30 days), uninodal segments were cultured in basal Murashige and Skoog (1962) supplemented with 0.01 mg/L of 1-naphthaleneacetic acid, 0.01 mg/L of 6-benzylaminopurine and 0.1 mg/L gibberellic acid. Plant regeneration was possible in 100% of the cultivars during the 6 subcultures. Regardless of the subculture, the average number of nodes regenerated per explant varied significantly among cultivar from two to five nodes per plants (P?0,0001). The average number of accumulated nodes was significantly different among cultivars with values that ranged from 46 to 16,568 nodes per plants (P?0,0001). Results show variability due to genotype, distinguishing three cultivars groups according to their propagation efficiency and growth in length ability. Determining the multiplication rate of different cassava cultivars is essential for optimizing micropropagation.

Tree growth habit differences as an explanatory variable of the climatic influence upon the radial growth variability of Prosopis flexuosa in the Central Monte Desert (Argentina). Dendroclimatological methods represent one of the most useful tools in analyzing the influence of climate upon the radial growth dynamics and morphology of woody species. In the Central Monte Desert, Prosopis flexuosa DC (algarrobo dulce), grows as one-stemmed as well as multi-stemmed tree. Previous researches showed the utility of the species ring widths as a proxy of climate variability. Nevertheless, these researches differed methodologically, by considering or rejecting the multi-stemmed trees. This work analyzed if the variability in the tree growth habit express differences in the algarrobo dulce dendroclimatological signal. Two tree-ring chronologies, one derived from the one-stemmed (UF) and the other from the multi-stemmed trees (MF) growing under the same ecological environment, were developed. The MF chronology showed higher sensibility than the UF to climate extremes and oscillation. This suggested that multi-stemmed trees represent a good proxy for explaining local climatic variability. Due to the widespread spatial distribution of this species, further works are needed to a deeper understanding of the presented results.

Leaf anatomy of the genus Smallanthus (Asteraceae, Millerieae). Given the great medicinal and nutritional importance of the leaf in Smallanthus species, such as the world famous “yacon” (Smallanthus sonchifolius), and that so far only have been studied four of the 23 species that constitute the genus, the leaf anatomy of all species of Smallanthus is analyzed here. A table of uses and vernacular names of the species of Smallanthus and a general description of leaf anatomy, including the petiole is presented. Three types of trichomes were identified: an eglandular simple conical hair, a glandular biseriate vesicular hair, and a glandular biseriate capitate subtype beta hair. Smallanthus species show almost no differences in the anatomy of the blade and petiole. The schizogenous secretory channels show a tendency to increase in number in the southernmost species.

Identification of woody Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae of Paranaense forest (Misiones, Argentina) using vegetative characters. In this study, I explored the diversity of vegetative morphological traits of native taxa of Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae (in the traditional circumscription) from Misiones Province of Argentina, in order to facilitate the identification of genera, species, subspecies, and varieties in the absence of flowers and fruits. Herbarium specimens from the 15 species of shrubs - trees and lianas of Caesalpinioideae belonging to 10 genera present in Misiones were studied. The analyzed traits were: life form, phyllotaxis, stem, leaf, stipules, glands and extrafloral nectaries, type of venation, pubescence, and buds. As a result, an identification key to all taxa studied and descriptions of vegetative characters of all the taxa are presented. A discussion of the diversity observed in vegetative characters is also added, as well as observations about distribution, habitat, and phenology. In addition, a vegetative key to subfamilies of shrubs-trees and lianas of Leguminosae of the Paranaense forests of Misiones is provided to facilitate identification of the Caesalpinioideae. In summary, these keys will be crucial for an accurate identification of Caesalpinioideae subfamily and their species, in seasons when flowers and fruits are absent.
