“Let’s Move on to the Recommendations.” The Use of Phrasal Verbs in Business Presentations of University Students in Hong Kong "让我们继续讨论建议"。香港大学生商务演讲中短语动词的使用
Pub Date : 2024-02-28 DOI: 10.59936/stile.v2i1.136

Phrasal verbs (PVs), as a notoriously difficult L2 feature, have attracted the attention of applied linguists for a few decades. Empowered by corpus linguistics, the current study explored the quantity and quality of PVs in business presentations of university students in Hong Kong, to investigate nuances of the PV production of students in contexts. The learner corpus consists of twenty business case study presentations by 36 mixed-L1 students. Quantitative results showed that students used a sizeable number of PVs accurately. The most common lexical verbs showed a different pattern compared with native speakers of English, while the most common adverbial particles were mostly identical to those used by native speakers. International students seemed to use more PVs than Chinese L1 students and the avoidance phenomenon was observed on a few PVs. The unnatural PV use mostly stemmed from misuse of the adverbial particles due to negative L1 transfer and two instances of creative PV use were observed on English L1 speakers. We advise language teachers to incorporate more comprehensive instruction of PVs in business English courses (including common collocations, syntactic particularities, and polysemy) as well as more authentic L2 exposure.

Bridging the Gap between Pedagogy and Workplace Needs 弥合教学和工作场所需求之间的差距
Pub Date : 2023-05-23 DOI: 10.59936/stile.v1i1.123

For a university teacher of business English to both undergraduates and postgraduates, one of the biggest challenges is the lack of suitable books with authentic texts and updated information for demonstration/illustration of workplace texts and genres. First, students nowadays expect authenticity but not dated examples from existing business English textbooks. Second, the genres and communicative functions covered in most business English textbooks are limited, and emerging features and genres of workplace texts are rarely covered. Third, research findings are highly sought after to inform how workplace texts are composed in terms of content, structure and language features. This paper will give examples of the niche that needs filling, and then discuss what ESP teachers can do.

Accurate Use of Schwa in British English 英国英语中弱读音的准确使用
Pub Date : 2023-03-15 DOI: 10.59936/stile.v1i1.80
Ryan Windsor
This two-part video series aims to introduce students to the importance of unstressed sounds in English words and unstressed words in English sentences when practising British English. In the first part, students listen and identify the difference between the schwa sound and other vowel sounds and then repeat and produce the sound. In the second part, the schwa sound is presented in the context of full sentences and the difference between stressed and unstressed words in sentences is highlighted. After both video sessions, the learner may decide to produce audio output of their learning by uploading a recording of themselves producing the schwa sound in context to the corresponding Padlet page. This plug-and-play lesson activity is innovative in the way that it combines both visual and audio stimuli with student production of an audio output to demonstrate the importance of the schwa sound in English. The corresponding Padlet page also acts as an archive of different learners’ productions of the sound. The activity can be used by itself as an introduction to the schwa sound or in combination with textbook/in class content. It may also be utilised as a reference for teachers who are new to the teaching of pronunciation. The Padlet page can also be remade and remixed by other teachers who may want a separate archive for their own students.
