Wild bee communities of Sardinia and Corsica, two Mediterranean islands, have been relatively understudied. In this article, Lasioglossum inexpectatum sp. nov., which is known exclusively in Sardinia and Corsica, is described, emphasizing the importance of ongoing research and conservation efforts to protect the unique wild bee biodiversity in the Mediterranean basin.

Until now, Sphex optimus F. SMITH, 1856 has been known from only the holotype which had presumably been collected in Western Africa. Here, new records of a taxon from Central America with phenotypic accordance are presented. Diagnostic characters of S. optimus and the Neotropical species are given and the equivalence of the two taxa is being postulated.

In this paper, we provide an overview of the seed chalcid wasps Bootanomyia spp. and Megastigmus spp. (Hymenoptera: Megastigmidae) in both Belgium and the Netherlands. Sixteen species, including six non-natives to Europe, are reported after checking over a thousand specimens. The European species Megastigmus aculeatus (Swederus, 1795) and M. suspectus Borries, 1895 are reported for the first time in Belgium. The European species Bootanomyia stigmatizans (Fabricius, 1798), Megastigmus rosae Bouček, 1971 and Megastigmus strobilobius Ratzeburg, 1848, and the Nearctic species Megastigmus atedius Walker, 1851 and Megastigmus lasiocarpae Crosby, 1913 (only the second report in Europe) are new for the Netherlands. Novel insights are offered on the ecology, morphology and phenology of Megastigmus aculeatus, Megastigmus nigrovariegatus and Megastigmus rosae.

Notes about spontaneous nesting of bumblebees’ queens in Belgium (Hymenoptera: Apidae). - To develop a rearing system for different wild bumblebee species, we experimented techniques for spontaneous nesting of wild queens. Our nest devices, which contain mouse litter as substrate, are used to attract wild bumblebee queens in search of a nest and to initiate brood construction. Over a total of four years of observation, we have installed 57 call nests with a 44 % success rate of nest initiation. However, this method has some limitations and does not show satisfactory results for ground-nesting bumblebee species.

Two species of Camptopoeum, C. (Camptopoeum) negevense and C. (Epimethea) subflavum, are reported from the Arabian Peninsula for the first time. The specimen label data was obtained from the bee collection of the Natural History Museum, London. This increases the known number of Arabian Camptopoeum to three. A key to these Arabian species is proposed, and descriptions of specimens and their genitalia are given.
