Parasiticides in dogs and cats: a risk-based approach

Justine Shotton
There are emerging concerns that parasiticides are contaminating the environment. This article looks at how veterinary professionals have a key role to play in balancing risks and benefits and moving to a more risk-based approach rather than blanket treatment for pets.

Anaesthesia in exotics part 2: birds
Pub Date : 2024-05-02 DOI: 10.12968/vetn.2024.0018
Hayley Ayers
Anaesthesia in exotic species is often viewed as high risk and many nurses may be apprehensive to perform it. However, with careful preparation and monitoring techniques, safe anaesthesia of exotics is possible. This article looks at the principles of anaesthesia in birds, including pre-anaesthetic preparation, anatomical differences, induction, maintenance and recovery.

Triage: is it safe to wait?
Pub Date : 2024-05-02 DOI: 10.12968/vetn.2024.0015
Sara Ho-Le
Triage is a systematic approach to categorising veterinary patients to ensure that the most emergent are seen first. Triaging a patient begins by obtaining a capsule history from the owner and performing a triage survey. This involves rapid assessment of the patient's perfusion parameters, and the purpose is to identify life-threatening abnormalities. Patients with life-threatening abnormalities should be immediately taken to the treatment area for assessment. A primary survey is then performed, which, in addition to physical examination, may also include point-of-care diagnostics. Life-saving interventions and therapies are administered during the primary survey to preserve the life of the patient. Once the patient has been stabilised, the veterinarian can perform a secondary survey, which involves a full physical assessment of the patient and obtaining a detailed history from the owner.

Anatomical evaluation of brachycephalism in cats and rabbits
Pub Date : 2024-05-02 DOI: 10.12968/vetn.2023.0004
Hannah Campbell
Although progress has been made in the veterinary profession when treating brachycephalic canines, brachycephalic cats and rabbits are often overlooked in practice. There also appears to be less public awareness and limited peer-reviewed research or studies on this topic. Cats and rabbits are often presented in practice when they already have clinical signs of disease or illness, so veterinary professionals must work with brachycephalic owners to educate on breed-related illnesses and when treatment is needed. This article explores the impact of brachycephalic conformation on both brachycephalic cats and rabbits. Similar to brachycephalic canines, anatomical factors to consider include: respiratory system, obesity, dentition, dermatology, ocular health, neurological issues, temperature regulation and reproduction. Although there are some similarities to dogs, brachycephalic cats and rabbits tend to be affected by anatomical changes differently in some cases. Therefore, veterinary assessments and treatments should still be patient-, breed- and species-specific.

Terms such as veterinary human factors, veterinary humanities and veterinary social work have all begun to circulate in the veterinary profession in recent years. This article defines these topics and suggests the term ‘veterinary human support’ as a useful umbrella term, and describes the reasons for implementing support. Suggestions for developing these roles are included, especially from the perspective of the veterinary nursing career.

Managing severe anaemia with a blood transfusion in a suspected IMHA case
Pub Date : 2024-05-02 DOI: 10.12968/vetn.2023.0043
Kelly Huitson
This article discusses a challenging case from initial presentation, stabilisation and treatment to relapse. The case had an inconclusive diagnosis and differentials of hemangiosarcoma or immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia. The case progression included intensive medical management and a whole-blood transfusion with an excellent outcome. The patient, Patch (8-year-old male neutered Jack Russell Terrier), presented with history of lethargy and sudden onset of inappetence. Clinical symptoms alongside a MPCV 19%, RBC 0.25, haemoglobin 63, high platelets and borderline basophils.

The recovery period
Pub Date : 2023-10-02 DOI: 10.12968/vetn.2023.14.8.330

Recovery from anaesthesia begins when the maintenance agent is discontinued and the patient starts to regain consciousness. The importance of patient monitoring throughout the recovery period should not be underestimated and no matter the patient or procedure, individual risks for the recovery period should be identified and mitigated. Each patient will recover differently from their anaesthetic experience. How the pre-anaesthesia, induction and maintenance phases of the anaesthesia have been prepared and planned will contribute to how the patient will recover.
