Saline lakes as barriers against pollution: a multidisciplinary overview Saline lakes are subject to numerous environmental impacts closely related to human activities, including mining, desiccation and pollution. These lakes are mostly located in arid and semi-arid regions located in endorheic basins, which combined with the low precipitation and high evaporation rates typical for these regions, may lead to the accumulation of pollutants. Saline lakes are polluted mainly through inputs of agricultural wastewater along with organic and inorganic wastes from domestic and industrial sources. The excessive anthropogenic loading of nutrients, especially nitrogen (N), can result in eutrophication of these ecosystems. Here, the importance of pollution in saline lakes was assessed, placing special emphasis on N pollution and its attenuation in aquatic interfaces. Two main interfaces are present in saline lakes: (1) the sediment-water interface; (2) the freshwater-saltwater interface. While the former is the most important one for microbial turnover, the latter plays also a key role in pollution attenuation based on solute transport by density-driven flows. The study of how saline lakes can attenuate N pollutants (e.g. nitrate) is a step forward in preserving the good ecological status of these ecosystems. This work highlights the need of integrating a wide range of techniques from different disciplines such as limnology, hydrogeology, geochemistry or microbial ecology for such studies. The effective application of conservation policies by managers will depend on the degree of knowledge of these systems.

Seston and eutrophication on a tropical, karst lake district: Lagunas de Montebello, Chiapas, Mexico Large quantities of seston are among the most important indicators of eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. The present study aimed to elucidate the role seston plays in the general limnological dynamics of a cluster of eighteen tropical karstic lakes with different anthropic impacts (non-impacted, oligotrophic, clear-water lakes, and impacted, eutrophic, turbid-water lakes) of the “Lagunas de Montebello” National Park lake district. The seston concentration was measured twice, in the warm/rainy and the cold/dry season. Vertical profiles of temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, pH, and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) were recorded at each lake. Water samples were taken along the water column to evaluate seston and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentration. Impacted lakes displayed higher seston (4.1-21.0 mg/L) and Chl-a (8.1-129.8 μg/L) concentrations, reduced euphotic zone (ZEU = 2.6-6.3 m), and superficial thermo(gradient = 0.8 ± 0.2 °C/m) and oxyclines (gradient = 4.7 ± 2.4 mg DO/m). Non-impacted lakes had lower seston (1.0-2.1 mg/L) and Chl-a (0.4-5.2 μg/L) concentrations, wide ZEU (10.1-33.4 m), and deeper thermo(gradient = 0.5 ± 0.1 °C/m) and oxyclines (gradient = 0.6 ± 0.4 mg DO/m). The changes reported in impacted lakes linked with the increase in the seston and Chl-a concentrations are most likely related to the eutrophication process associated with anthropogenic activities (agriculture, urban development, land-use change) in the NW part of the area. This research highlights the fragility of the tropical karst lake ecosystems worth protecting to preserve the aquatic ecosystem’s health.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease that affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), causing chronic pain and disability. To diagnose patients suffering from this disease before advanced degradation of the bone, we developed a diagnostic tool called TMJOAI. This machine learning based algorithm is capable of classifying the health status TMJ in of patients using 52 clinical, biological and jaw condyle radiomic markers. The TMJOAI includes three parts. the feature preparation, selection and model evaluation. Feature generation includes the choice of radiomic features (condylar trabecular bone or mandibular fossa), the histogram matching of the images prior to the extraction of the radiomic markers, the generation of feature pairwise interaction, etc.; the feature selection are based on the p-values or AUCs of single features using the training data; the model evaluation compares multiple machine learning algorithms (e.g. regression-based, tree-based and boosting algorithms) from 10 times 5-fold cross validation. The best performance was achieved with averaging the predictions of XGBoost and LightGBM models; and the inclusion of 32 additional markers from the mandibular fossa of the joint improved the AUC prediction performance from 0.83 to 0.88. After cross-validation and testing, the tools presented here have been deployed on an open-source, web-based system, making it accessible to clinicians. TMJOAI allows users to add data and automatically train and update the machine learning models, and therefore improve their performance.
