Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, millions of Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes. Millions have decided to leave the country and sought safety in other countries, while millions more have been displaced within Ukraine. Poland expressed solidarity with Ukraine and its citizens, both in Ukraine and in Poland. On top of state-level actions, Polish society and foreign communities in Poland came together and organized numerous solidarity actions. The influx of people from Ukraine also started a discussion about the treatment of refugees in Poland and possible changes to the functioning of the state and the society. This article examines the solidarity actions towards Ukrainian refugees, focusing on both symbolic actions and humanitarian and economic aid. It also briefly analyzes possible challenges that might have an impact on future relations.

This article investigates the intersection of Hindutva politics and Bharatiya Janata Party policies concerning Rohingyas in India. Analyzing the government’s approach through official statements, legislative measures, and implementation strategies, it aims to uncover the factors shaping BJP policies toward Rohingyas. Additionally, it explores the Rohingya community’s perspectives on government attitudes, political dynamics, and implemented policies, providing a nuanced understanding of the policies’ impact. By shedding light on the intricate interplay between political ideology and refugee governance, the article contributes to a deeper understanding of migration, identity politics, and governance challenges in contemporary India. Scrutinizing the interweaving threads of political philosophy and refugee management, the research not only documents the current situation but also offers insights into broader implications for India’s political landscape and the lived experiences of the Rohingya community. This exploration is a crucial step toward understanding the evolving socio-political landscape in India concerning the Rohingya refugee crisis.

Henk Jan van Essen
The article centres on a study, extending from two preceding case studies, with a specific focus on exploring the converting role of innovation energy in the realm of innovative work behaviour (IWB). The findings underscore the pivotal role of innovation energy in converting the individual innovation properties—creativity, psychological empowerment and optimism—into IWB. It also underscores the significance of organisational attention to these individual properties, along with four additional working mechanisms—autonomy in work design, innovative teamwork, supportive leadership and external contacts—all of which impact the converting process. Insights gleaned from this case study show that innovation energy plays a crucial role in the overall IWB process. Through a careful examination of the interplay between the construct of innovation energy and five associated mechanisms, the article offers an understanding of the IWB process as observed through the lens of engaged employees actively demonstrating IWB.

Pub Date : 2024-01-23 DOI: 10.1163/27730611-bja10022
D. N. Kusumaningrum, Dion Maulana Prasetya, Novin Farid Styo Wibowo
In light of the evolving post-COVID-19 global development agenda, this article delves into the conceptualization of resilience within the creative economy as portrayed in public discourse. Using media analysis, the article scrutinizes discourse patterns evident in Jawa Pos, Indonesia’s premier media outlet, from 2020 to 2021. The insights presented are corroborated by a comprehensive literature review and an examination of official government reports. This study examines seven creative industries that dominated public discourse during the pandemic: games, software applications, film, video production, art performance, culinary arts, and crafts. Digital platforms have invigorated sectors such as gaming, culinary arts, crafts, and video content; furthermore, local tourism initiatives have been instrumental in catalysing economic rejuvenation in areas such as the culinary arts, crafts, and art performance. This analysis encourages further studies on the resilience of the creative economy.

“Searching for Meanings and Becoming Better Moms” "寻找意义,做更好的妈妈"
Pub Date : 2024-01-23 DOI: 10.1163/27730611-bja10020
Hsien-Ming Lin
This article explores the education-related experiences of Vietnamese immigrant women in Taiwan. The author adopts a qualitative methodology, utilizing semi-structured interviews, followed by a constant comparative analysis. Three core themes are unearthed: the participants’ learning experiences, the process of meaning-making, and the multidimensional impacts of their education. Key findings include the effort invested by participants in obtaining familial support to pursue their education and the learning challenges posed by language barriers. Furthermore, the pursuit of education is found to extend to deeper aspects of self-identity, encompassing motherhood and empowerment. This article illustrates how higher education can facilitate better employment and enhance societal integration and intra-familial power dynamics for immigrant women. Its impact is not unilateral but spans multiple dimensions of their lives in their host society. The insights gained from this article indicate a need for broader, comparative, and diverse research to understand experiences across other immigrant communities in Taiwan.

Abstract The research that led to this article examines a case study of a social enterprise ( SE ) that utilized the support of university social responsibility ( USR ) to save a rural community, reviving that community’s ability to empower itself. A qualitative approach was adopted to describe the SE development process. Observations and interviews with key participants and beneficiaries were also conducted. The findings were analyzed based on the value–process–impact framework to show comprehensively how the SE identified problems, defined its mission, and designed its business model and activities. The study shows the positive impacts that the organization had on the community as well as on the university students. The article highlights USR ’s significant role and strong potential for solving social problems when incorporating the SE model, emphasizing the importance of SE s adopting a self-sustainable approach to combining resources and designing business models.

Innovations amid Gaps between Policy and Practice for Sustainable Development 可持续发展政策与实践差距中的创新
Pub Date : 2023-06-29 DOI: 10.1163/27730611-bja10001
Herlin Chien, Shu-ling Lin
This study asks under what institutional condition or governance structure might the gap between policy and practice be conducive to innovative practices. It examines how social innovations are formed amid gaps between policy and practice to tame a wicked problem and achieve sustainable development. First, data was gathered during the implementation of a livestock wastewater policy in four municipalities in southern Taiwan where livestock wastewater pollution is rampant and presents a wicked problem. Next, the focus narrowed to the governing network, namely metagovernance, ignoring other factors such as the role of the social entrepreneur. The article argues that the gap between policy and practice can be framed as a window of opportunity, with positive connotations for policy implementation innovation. The authors analyze the empirical and showcase how innovations, represented by the heterogeneity of metagovernance, were generated in a recursive manner amid gaps between policy and practice in different localities.
