ECR Spotlight is a series of interviews with early-career authors from a selection of papers published in Journal of Experimental Biology and aims to promote not only the diversity of early-career researchers (ECRs) working in experimental biology but also the huge variety of animals and physiological systems that are essential for the ‘comparative’ approach. Justine Nguyen is an author on ‘ The buzz within: the role of the gut microbiome in honeybee social behavior’, published in JEB. Justine is a PhD candidate in the lab of Chelsea Cook at Marquette University, investigating how individual physiology scales to ultimately affect social dynamics.

Igor Noll Guagnoni is an author on ‘ Cardiovascular responses and the role of the neurohumoral cardiac regulation during digestion in the herbivorous lizard Iguana iguana’, published in JEB. Igor conducted the research described in this article while a master’s student in Luiz Henrique Florindo's lab at São Paulo State University (UNESP), São José do Rio Preto, Brazil. Igor is now a PhD student in the lab of Luiz Henrique Florindo at São Paulo State University, Brazil, and Tobias Wang’s lab at Aarhus University, Denmark, investigating cardiorespiratory physiology applied to animal conservation and evolution.

Alexander Hansson is an author on ‘ Sex and early-life conditions shape telomere dynamics in an ectotherm’, published in JEB. Alexander conducted the research described in this article while a PhD student in Mats Olsson's lab at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and Erik Wapstra's lab at the University of Tasmania, Australia. He has a particular interest in the effects of early-life conditions on telomere dynamics and life history traits in ectotherms.
