We consider the well-known optimal decomposition algorithm for the tardiness problem. The algorithm presents conditions which determine the positions a job could occupy in an optimal sequence. This resulted in optimal solutions for up to 100 jobs. We analyze these conditions and present simplified conditions. We then study a more recent Rule which when combined with these conditions resulted in optimal solutions for up to 500 jobs. We present several properties under which this recent rule is satisfied. We provide mathematical proofs for our properties. We believe that our study will enable more theoretical research in this field and will eventually enable optimal solutions for very large job sets.

Federal law expanded civil rights and equal opportunity to all employees. Major U.S. employers have embraced the expansion by using affirmative action plans and diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. Concerns raised by a more conservative Supreme Court and its reversal of affirmative action in higher education, the recent enactment of regressive state laws aimed to diminish the rights of the LGBTQ+ community and invalidate affirmative action and DEI efforts should not be allowed to discourage the progress made. Employers can and should stay the course of expanded civil rights and equal opportunity in the workplace for all firm employees.

Carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates (RECs) are widely used instruments that help firms mitigate their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). This paper investigates which internal firm characteristics are associated with investments in carbon offsets or RECs and how these purchases impact firms’ performance. Based on data from publicly traded firms in North America and Europe from 2012-2022, this paper uses a propensity score matching approach to analyze the effects of these investments on firms’ environmental scores, GHG emissions, and financial performance. Additionally, this paper employs an instrumental variable approach to examine whether board gender diversity increases carbon offset or REC purchases. The findings reveal that firms that purchase carbon offsets or RECs face higher environmental scores and higher GHG emissions, suggesting corporate greenwashing behavior. This paper also demonstrates that these purchases lead to higher sales, profitability, and assets, but lower Tobin’s Q for REC buyers. Lastly, this paper finds that a greater presence of women on the board does not lead to greater purchases of carbon offsets or RECs.

The dynamic capability view (DCV) has gained attraction in many areas of business administration. This article aims to analyze the evolution of the dynamic capability view (DCV) theory within the operations and supply chain field. In this article, we use author co-citation, term co-occurrence, and topic modeling techniques to uncover the evolution of DCV in operations and supply chain management areas. The analysis was performed on 166 peer-reviewed articles from the top four operations management (OM) journals. The study finds the prominent authors co-cited together along with the representative topics in these papers. Furthermore, newer topics, such as supply chain resilience and dynamic-based capabilities, such as data analytics capabilities, are gaining prominence. Finally, the future research agenda is discussed along with the limitations of the paper.
