- In this article, mathematical models of the High-Speed Steel (HSS) cutting tool flank wear in various external metal cutting environments are developed. Initially, the metal machining operation is conducted in a lathe by machining a cylindrical blank of Stal 45 (analog is AISI 1045) with a turning tool made of P6M5 (analog is AISI M2). The machining process is conducted in three external cutting environments: dry cutting and two different cutting fluid environments. According to tool flank wear results from the experimental research in cutting conditions, three novel mathematical models of the tool flank wear have been developed using the Lagrange polynomial. The models express the flank wear of the HSS cutting tool depending on the cutting speed changes in three various external cutting environments. Developed models were tested using engineering programs, and tool wear indications depending on the cutting speed acquired from the novel models were compared to the original results achieved by the experimental research. Consentaneity of the results taken using the models to the experimental research data was about 93 %, 86%, and 93% for the three models respectively.
