Conceptual framework to define management strategies for silvopastoral systems in native forests 定义原生林中森林放牧系统管理战略的概念框架

A�������. Most of the native forests in Argentina are used for livestock production with li�le sustainable silvopastoral management. Our objective here is to discuss different management strategies where natural and human capital are combined to co-produce ecosystem services (ES) provided by silvopastoral systems in native forests, interacting with different ecosystem functions and biodiversity. Also, we provide perspectives that should be analyzed in a context of socio-ecological approaches in agro-forestry landscapes. Four types of theoretical strategies are proposed (win-win, win-lose, lose-win and lose-lose), which define the social-ecological and economic thresholds that determine the provision of ES and biodiversity in the long term. The evidence of the win-lose strategy occurs when the silvopastoral systems are managed mainly to increase economic profitability through increments in forage biomass aimed to increase livestock production in the medium and long term. Deferred deforestation was presented as a typical example of lose-lose strategy in the Chaco region based on short-term management strategies by only obtaining commodities (crops or livestock products) without considering the negative interactions with other ES and loss of biodiversity. The information provided in this work should assist stakeholders and researchers to identify thresholds of economic profitability and ecological resilience in ecosystems under management. The proposed approaches provide a utilitarian vision of ecosystem services and key aspects of social-ecological resilience.

The length-weight relationship (LWR) was estimated for six fish species of the order Characiformes: Curimatella meyeri , Hoplias malabaricus , Potamorhina altamazonica , Potamorhina latior , Pygocentrus na�ereri , Schizodon fasciatus , collected from oxbow lakes on the floodplain of the middle Purus River in western Brazilian Amazonia. The specimens were collected in January, May, and September 2012, during both diurnal and nocturnal periods. Allometric coefficients (b) for the studied species ranged between 2.98 and 3.34. The correlation coefficients for the LWR (r²) ranged between 0.954 and 0.993. The data presented here provide important insights for the development of effective measures for the conservation and management of the study species.

During the period 2004-2008, a significant increase in water flows in this region modified its chemical characteristics and favored the development of silverside. In October 2009, water stopped entering into the system and, in 2011, many lakes disappeared. The objective of this work was to analyze the survival and fishing yield of O. bonariensis in a context of environmental tolerance due to the gradual surface decrease and the increase of salts concentration in La Brava shallow lake (37°55’24’’ S - 65°55’18’’ W). Water salinity increased progressively from 7.05 to 59.3 g/L and O. bonariensis was present up to a concentration of 49.9 g/L. Fish size evidenced a virgin population with specimens up to 482 mm of LEst and 7 years of age. High catches per unit of effort (CPUE) in number and biomass were observed, with maximums of 375 fish and 204. 6 kg/night, but these did not exhibit a strong linear correlation with saline concentration. The salinity tolerance observed in O. bonariensis is higher than that reported by other authors and places this freshwater fish among the most euryhaline in the world.

Catálogo polínico de plantas usadas por tres abejorros del género Bombus (Hymenoptera: Apidae) en la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes colombianos 哥伦比亚安第斯山脉东部三种大黄蜂(膜翅目:蜂科)使用的花粉植物目录

plants used by three of the most common Andean bumblebees, Bombus rubicundus , B. hortulanus and B. pauloensis . Sampling was conducted in six localities of the Bogotá savanna, covering an altitudinal gradient between 2600 and 3500 m a. s. l. Floral samples from all localities were prepared by acetolysis, and then analyzed. A reference catalog was digitized from the pollen extracted from the body of workers of each bumblebee species. Pollen grains were described according to their size and morphology. The similarity of the resources used by the different bumblebee species was compared using Jaccard’s similarity and distance index. Pollen grains from 99 plants were isolated, identified and described, with Taraxacum officinale , Vallea stipularis , Senna multiglandulosa , Trifolium pratense and Trifolium repens being the pollen sources shared by all species. The most generalist species and the one that used the most exotic plants was B. pauloensis. An illustrated pollen catalog is provided with all the resources used by the bees.

How does domestic livestock affect plant biomass and fecundity of different successional types of species in Patagonian Monte? Plants respond to disturbances according to their physiological characteristics, their lifeform, and their ecological role or function within the community. We assessed the response, in terms of biomass and fitness, to a gradient of stocking density (measured as livestock units.year.ha -1 ) considering different successional types of species (early, intermediate and late species) from Patagonian Monte Desert. We estimated plant biomass and fitness through different variables such as plant size (diameter x height of the plant), reproductive effort (% flowering or fruiting branches) and percentage of viable seeds (seed set). We observed that browsing decreased plant biomass and fitness, both through reproductive effort and seed set. However, the successional types of species showed different seed set in response to grazing intensity. With increased stocking density, the size of early species decreased, the size of intermediate species increased and the size of late species did not show significant changes. In general, browsing negatively affected the reproductive effort of all species, and the seed set only in late specie, while early and intermediate species showed an increase in seed set. These results suggest that late species are the most affected by livestock in terms of fecundity, which might reduce their recruitment. The increase in their biomass with stocking density in intermediate species suggests a compensatory response, which could give them a short-term advantage. Tissue loss suffered by plants due to livestock consumption impacts the seed set, with possible consequences on the rate and time of seedling emergence. These results aid to understand plant population dynamics under disturbances, providing useful information to elaborate adequate conservation, sustainable management and restoration strategies for arid ecosystems.
