The Cajas National Park (CNP) is located 30 km from the city of Cuenca (Ecuador), in the western Andean chain and occupies an area of almost 30,000 ha, between 3300-4450 m of altitude, and includes various ecosystems: subpáramo, herbaceous paramo and super-páramo, which include grasslands (dominant in CNP), wetlands, Polylepis sp. pl. and scrubs; above 4200 m, bush communities adapted to extreme edaphoclimatic conditions dominate. For the elaboration of the catalogue of the vascular flora of the CNP, we compiled, refined and analysed the information available in the herbaria of the University of Azuay (Cuenca, Ecuador) (HA), Missouri Botanical Garden (MO), Pontificia Universidad Católica de Ecuador (QCA) and Tropicos® database, with records of altitudes above 3300 m asl and our collections in the years 2012-2019. 666 species are documented, belonging to 264 genera and 89 botanical families; we describe their biological form (biotype), habitat, distribution ‒with special attention to endemic and non-native species‒ and degree of threat. Finally, the data for each of these criteria are jointly analysed and compared with other Andean mountain ranges. Dichondra macrocalyx Meisn. and Piptochaetium tovarii Sánchez Vega are reported for the first time in Ecuador.

We analyze the activity of Josep Cuatrecasas Arumí (1903-1996) as editorial secretary of the magazine Cavanillesia, published between 1928 and 1938. We value his participation from four fronts: secretary, author, reviewer and re-rated. The study allows specifying the date of publication of the articles in the journal, the influence of Emili Huguet del Villar on the geobotanical methodology followed by Josep Cuatrecasas and his effort to disseminate the new botanical publications, from the pages of the journal, together with Pius Font i Quer.

The aim of this article is to present the life and professional trajectory of José Cuatrecasas Arumí (1903-1996), one of the 20th century's most important Spanish botanists. Therefore, this is a historical study that intends to link the historical circumstances Cuatrecasas experienced with his training as a botanist. This Catalan botanist developed his work in various settings (Barcelona, Madrid, Geneva, Berlin) from his early studies to his doctorate and postdoctoral training, but he began to take an interest in tropical flora from the late 1920s and, more importantly, from the 1930s onwards, when he obtained a chair of botany at the Facultad de Farmacia of the  Universidad de Madrid and also became part of the Real Jardín Botánico of Madrid by directing its Tropical Flora Section. The Civil War permanently disrupted the development of his scientific career in Spain, as his Republican militancy forced him into exile. Initially in Colombia and later in the United States, Cuatrecasas continued his lines of research on tropical flora, completing them in the 1960s with an ambitious project in the field of Neotropical Flora. This is how the life and scientific curriculum of one of the best Spanish botanists of the 20th century was forged.

The Irano-Turanian Rumex chalepensis has been recorded in two localities in Morocco since 2013, apparently for the first time in Africa and rather disjunct from the species’ known distribution range. Populations were found in eastern Morocco: one close to the city of Midelt (High Moulouya valley), in the high plains between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas mountain ranges, whereas the second is located close to the city of Jerada (Lower Moulouya valley / High plateaus), close to the border with Algeria. This species is morphologically similar to R. obtusifolius and might have been overlooked elsewhere in North Africa. The presence of the latter in Morocco, always assumed to be very questionable up to present, is also confirmed here. Distinguishing features for these two species are discussed, some illustrations are also presented and R. chalepensis is lectotypified. It is most likely a naturalized weed in Morocco although it cannot be completely ruled out that it is a previously overlooked native species with two disjunct areas, an Irano-Turanian and North African one.

In this study, we carry out a revision of the Italian specimens belonging to Juncus L. subgenus Agathryon Raf. sect. Tenageia Dumort stored in the Herbarium Centrale Italicum of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence. By re-examining the 650 specimens present, we find that all the taxa belonging to this section are present in the herbarium. This work also allows us to highlight several novelties concerning species distribution at the regional level, thus confirming the importance of studying herbarium material. On the other hand, the work calls attention to a lack of information at the regional level for some taxa (e.g., J. sphaerocarpus), showing it would be desirable for botanists to continue to send samples to the herbarium to fill these gaps. This study also has implications for some museological issues, allowing the movement of specimens stored under ancient or obsolete names to the correct folders and to update the nomenclatural herbarium database, so contributing to the improvement of the future usefulness of these collections.

This study aims to assess ethnobotanical knowledge in Kabylia, focusing on the traditional uses of medicinal plants. The purpose was to quantify the traditional knowledge of medicinal plants commonly used by local populations for treating a wide range of ailments, with a view to preserve the medicinal knowledge and the biodiversity of this area. Ethnobotanical data was gathered using a questionnaire. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 69 key informants at six villages of Bouira province. A quantitative analysis by means of different indices including the informant consensus factor (FIC), use value (UV), relative frequencies of citation (RFC), and fidelity level (FL), was performed for the recorded medicinal plants. Overall, 136 plants species were recorded. Their uses in 10 disease categories were documented. They belong to 54 families, the most represented are the Asteraceae (18 species) and Lamiaceae (16 species). With 98 use reports, diabetes is the most treated ailment. The highest RFC values are recorded for Carthamus caeruleus (0.57) and Asplenium ceterach (0.52), indicating that these plants are the most preferred species used in study areas, to treat skin burns and kidney stones respectively. Plant with the highest use value is Lavandula stoechas (1.21), used to treat different digestive disorders (bloating, colon pain, and stomach ulcer). We found 13 medicinal plants having the highest FL value (100%), e.g. Rhamnus alaternus (jaundice), Lonicera implexa (weak eyesight), and Ulmus minor for treating skeletomuscular ailments. These latter are the most interesting species used in the treatment of a specific ailment category. The maximum FIC value (0.86) indicated that there was high agreement in the use of plants (e.g. Aristolochia fontanesii and Ophrys speculum) in genitourinary and reproductive ailment category among the informants. We highlighted the homogeneity of informant knowledge in medicinal plants appropriate for different ailment categories and the most preferred plant species used to treat each ailment category in the study area. By overstepping the limits of an orally transmitted pharmacopoeia, we aim to valorize the huge ethnopharmacology legacy of the region for promising pharmacological perspectives.

Plant with the highest use value is Lavandula stoechas (1.21), used to treat different digestive disorders (bloating, colon pain, and stomach ulcer). We found 13 medicinal plants having the highest FL value (100%), e.g. Rhamnus alaternus (jaundice), Lonicera implexa (weak eyesight), and Ulmus minor for treating skeletomuscular ailments. These latter are the most interesting species used in the treatment of a specific ailment category. The maximum FIC value (0.86) indicated that there was high agreement in the use of plants (e.g. Aristolochia fontanesii and Ophrys speculum) in genitourinary and reproductive ailment category among the informants. \u0000We highlighted the homogeneity of informant knowledge in medicinal plants appropriate for different ailment categories and the most preferred plant species used to treat each ailment category in the study area. By overstepping the limits of an orally transmitted pharmacopoeia, we aim to valorize the huge ethnopharmacology legacy of the region for promising pharmacological perspectives.","PeriodicalId":54240,"journal":{"name":"Mediterranean Botany","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47788559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sixteen new Asteraceae are added to the non-indigenous flora of Tunisia. Six of them (Dimorphotheca ecklonis, Gaillardia pulchella, Gazania linearis var. linearis, Guizotia abyssinica, Rudbeckia triloba and Tithonia diversifolia) are also new for the flora of North Africa. Chrysanthemum morifolium is here first reported for the Mediterranean Basin. Seven genera (Argyranthemum, Bidens, Dimorphotheca, Gaillardia, Guizotia, Rudbeckia and Tithonia) are recorded for the first time for the vascular flora of Tunisia. Most of these species escaped from gardens and pots and became casual along roadsides and/or disturbed areas after cypsela dispersion (except for Chrysanthemum morifolium). Some species, even though appearing to be well established locally and are potentially invasive at a worldwide level, still do not behave so in Tunisia. In addition to the floristic notes, the typification of the names Dimorphotheca ecklonis, Gorteria linearis and Mirasolia diversifolia are discussed.

Temperate Deciduous Forests occur almost exclusively in the northern hemisphere and thrive under temperate climate with cold winter and warm-humid summer. They covered a continuous belt during most of the Tertiary across the continent Laurasia occupying a large area in higher latitudes. With the cooling of the Earth’s climate and the appearance of the subtropical aridity areas, in combination with the separation of North America from Eurasia, this continuous area split into the three mainly existing now: Eastern North America, Western Eurasia and Eastern Asia. The tree flora reveals the common origin of the three current areas and the events causing more or less severe extinctions during the cold periods of the Pleistocene, in combination with the mountain uplift did happen since the Miocene affected differently to them. The basic features of the deciduous trait and its likely origin are discussed, as well as the ecologic implications of such a trait. For further research, the current possibilities provided by available vegetation datasets (EVA, sPlot) opens the possibility of using a large mass of vegetation plots data involving most of the vascular flora of these forests in order to find out insights about their origin and evolution over time as well as their links with current or past environmental conditions.
