Abstract This study reports on high potential of photoautotrophic biohydrogen production in co-culture of the novel hydrogen producing microalga Carteria crucifera AARL G045 with its bacterial flora. Hydrogen production from immobilised and free cells were compared under photoautotrophic and photofermentation conditions. Two bacterial floras of Carteria crucifera AARL G045 cultures were isolated and identified by 16S rDNA sequence analysis as Agrobacterium tumefaciens G045-01 and Aeromicrobium kwangyangensis G045-02. As a result, co-culture of Carteria crucifera AARL G045 and A. kwangyangensis G045-02 generated higher level of hydrogen gas than that of the mono algal culture by about 1.32 times. In addition, co-culture of both free cells of the microalga and the bacterium produced higher hydrogen than both co-immobilisation in calcium alginate by about 2.04 times.

Propagation by seeds and cuttings was studied in Orites myrtoidea (“Dwarf Radal”), a shrub with ornamental potential that belongs to the Proteaceae family and it is native to Chile and Argentina. The plant material was collected in the autumn in the Andes mountain range from Pinto, Bío Bío Region. Four levels of moist stratification at 10°C (0, 7, 14, and 21 days), and one level using Gibberellic acid (250 ppm) as a positive control, were tested to determine the effect on seed germination. The cutting’s rooting percentages and grades were determined by testing 5 levels of quick dip in IBA liquid solution (0; 1,000, 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 ppm) and one level using IBA in powder formulation (1500 ppm). The highest germination percentages were found with 21 days stratification and with immersion in Gibberelic acid, 80% and 92%, respectively. In vegetative propagation the rooting percentage was over 90% in all treatments, however, all IBA-treated cuttings had a medium to abundant rooting, superior to the control, which had a scarce to moderate rooting.

Abstract This paper introduces eight ornamental perennial garden escapees that were recorded by the authors of this article on Lucavsala Island, Riga (Latvia) in 2016. Our data on Achillea ptarmica cv. ‘Boule de Neige’, Artemisia ludoviciana, Asclepias syriaca, Campanula lactiflora, Heliopsis helianthoides, Lathyrus latifolius, Phlox paniculata and Rudbeckia hirta contribute to the knowledge about the occurrence of these taxa in wild. All these species are also growing in the collection of ornamental perennials in the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia. A review of these species in Latvian herbarium collections has been conducted. Five species, Heliopsis helianthoides, Artemisia ludoviciana, Campanula lactiflora, Lathyrus latifolius, Phlox paniculata, were observed for the first time outside cultivation forming relatively stable, reproducing populations. Two species, Achillea ptarmica multiplex cultivar and Rudbeckia hirta, were previously observed in seminatural habitats and, thus, considered as casual aliens at the naturalization stage. One of the species, Asclepias syriaca, was considered a new to Latvia casual alien species with high potential of invasiveness.

Abstract The aim of our work was to analyse synanthropic fraction of spontaneous flora of gardens and parks in the Middle Pobuzhzhia Region of Ukraine and to reveal the features of synanthropisation. The landscapes of gardens and parks in the Region include botanical gardens, arboretums and monuments of landscape art. A total of 15 objects were studied. The floras of parks were estimated by proportion of different groups (origin, naturalisation degree, time and ways of introduction) of synanthropic species. The synanthropic fraction of spontaneous flora was calculated using the indices of synanthropisation, apophytisation, anthropophytisation, archeophytisation, kenophytisation and modernisation. These indices were specified for each park and for the Middle Pobuzhzhia Region in general. The obtained data were compared to each other and to the analogous urban floras from different zones of Ukraine. It was revealed that the apophytisation processes were dominated by the processes of adventisation in most of the parks. The proportion of the synanthropic fraction of spontaneous flora of the Middle Pobuzhzhia Region was significantly lower compared to urban floras of some cities of Ukraine, and despite a considerable anthropogenic pressure retained some features of natural flora.

Abstract A total of 165 lichen taxa collected from Sisimiut in West Greenland in summer 2017 were reported and categorized toward their climatic preferences. Almost 68% of the 165 lichens are more or less equally distributed in continental and oceanic areas of Greenland. More than 26% of the lichens occur most frequently in oceanic areas and more rarely in continental areas. Almost 5% of the lichens occur most frequently in continental areas and more rarely in oceanic areas. Two lichens are distinctly oceanic. No distinctly continental lichens were found in the present investigation. The results are in good accordance with those obtained from similar investigations in West Greenland. Two different climatic scenarios and their influence upon the lichen communities are discussed.

Abstract The aim of the study was to consolidate data on lichens of the genus Micarea Fr. from the Russian Far East. A total of 19 Micarea species were found to be known from this area. Micarea laeta and M. microareolata were new to Asia and Russia. Additionally, M. laeta was reported new to North America, Austria and Great Britain, M. microareolata – to North America, Czech Republic and Germany as well. Micarea contexta was reported new to Asia, Micarea adnata and M. tomentosa were reported new to the Russian Far East, M. hedlundii to the South of the Russian Far East and M. lignaria to the Sakhalin Region. Micarea turfosa was excluded from the list. The distribution of taxa and some differences between related species were discussed. Molecular data were obtained and used for phylogenetic analysis of Micarea contexta, M. laeta and M. microareolata.
