Fragilaria gracilis is one of the most reported Fragilaria species in Europe, observed in a broad range of water bodies, ranging from (ultra)oligotrophic rivers to even eutrophic lakes. A revision of this important taxon based on the analysis of the morphology of a large number of historic and recent populations was highly needed. In the present study, type material of Fragilaria gracilis and several related taxa such as Synedra radians, Fragilaria pseudolaevissima, S. utermoehlii, F. aquaplus, F. boreomongolica and F. tridentina together with more than 10 modern populations were investigated using LM and SEM observations. The results based on these comparisons show that Fragilaria (Synedra) radians is the name for the taxon formerly known as F. gracilis. Moreover, detailed analysis demonstrated that F. pseudolaevissima and Synedra utermoehlii are conspecific with F. radians and should be considered as heterotypic synonyms. The observations made in this study also resulted in the description of several new species, often with distinct ecologies and distribution areas: Fragilaria huerlimannii Van de Vijver sp. nov., F. acerosa Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel, Jarlman et Ector sp. nov., F. neglecta Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel, Jarlman et Ector sp. nov., F. heudreana Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel et Ector sp. nov., F. eutraphenta Van de Vijver, Kusber et D.M.Williams sp. nov., and F. mertensiana Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel et Ector sp. nov. Using an analysis of the associated diatom flora, the ecological preferences of each taxon are briefly discussed.
基于这些比较的结果表明,Fragilaria(Synedra)radians是以前被称为F.gracilis的分类单元的名称。 ,F.eutrachinta Van de Vijver,Kusber et D.M.Williams sp.nov.和F.mertensana Van de Vij ver,C.E.Wetzel et Ector sp.nov..

: Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) are unicellular organisms with extremely high species diversity. According to AlgaeBase, the names of approximately 17 thousand species are currently considered to be taxonomically accepted. It is assumed that there are about 100,000 species of diatoms on the planet. Sexual reproduction is an obligatory stage of the life cycle in many diatoms due to specific structure of their frustules and the mode of reduction and restoration of the latter. At the same time, analysis of literature showed that over the entire three–century history of the study, data (in some cases very incomplete) have been accumulated on the sexual reproduction of approximately 350 species. There are about 1000 literature sources providing information about sexual reproduction of diatoms. Here, we present a summary of those species of Bacillariophyta for which data on sexual reproduction are available. The degree of knowledge of the particular classes of diatoms was analysed.

: A new freshwater diatom species Conticribra sinica sp. nov. Yu, You et Wang from three lakes in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China, is described here using a combination of morphological and molecular data from ribosomal DNA genes. The primary distinguishing characteristic of C. sinica was the presence of a non–plicate or slightly–plicate valve face and a single ring marginal fultoportulae that was located at the junction between the valve face and the mantle. There were 4–11 valve face fultoportulae that were located at the subcenter of the valve face. In addition, a single rimoportula replaced a marginal fultoportulae. Areolae loculate were open to the outside by irregularly circular foramina or slit foramina that are radially arranged. Internally, cribra were continuously arranged long a radial arrangement of areolae. Characteristics of the new species with other similar species of Conticribra . Phylogenetic analysis of the nuclear small subunit (SSU) rDNA sequences and nuclear large subunit (LSU) rDNA gene sequences revealed that C. sinica in a single clade at a considerable sequence distance from the other Conticribra species.
Yu,You et Wang进行了描述。

: Rocky intertidal regions are diverse as they provide many unique habitats for the growth of cyanobacteria. From outcrops battered by waves, tidal pools, and periods of desiccations due to tides, these regions offer distinct environments and much of their cyanobacterial diversity remains unexplored. To help elucidate cyanobacteria from this habitat, one nostocalean cyanobacterium from Brittany, France was isolated and cultured. Typical morphological features including filaments with heteropolar trichomes, basal or intercalary heterocytes, false branching, and long hyaline apical hairs suggested the genus Nunduva . The combination of 16S rRNA gene and 16S–23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS), along with diagnosable morphological characteristics supports a distinct taxon from previously described species. Herein, the novel false branching cyanobacterium Nunduva sanctimaloensis sp. nov. is described along with its reproduction through modified monocytes.

: We add four new species to the recently established genus Lacustriella Kulikovskiy, Lange–Bertalot et Metzeltin and characterize morphology of the taxa based on LM and SEM observations. Lacustriella cuspidata , L. rombea , L. radiata and L. solita share all of the typical morphological features of the genus including longitudinal canal along each valve margin, radiate uniseriate striae terminated with large elongated areolae, and external distant raphe ends bent oppositely. L. cuspidata is peculiar among the other Lacustriella with rows of small pores look as if they continue striae on the surface of longitudinal canals as well as with the axial area sharply widened into the asymmetrical central area. L. rombea is different in combination of valve outline with unprotracted rostrate apices, irregular areolation at centre of the external valve, and slit–like areola occluded with volae. In L. radiata distinctive characters include protracted rostrate valve apices, rhombic central area and volated slit–like areolae. L. solita differs in the highest density of areolae in striae and an ornamented surface of longitudinal canals. New species were compared to the closest morphologically similar taxa. Some general ecological properties and distribution in the littoral zone of the ancient lake are given. microscope (Zeiss, Gottingen, Germany) with a 100× oil immersion objective. LM photographs were taken with an attached TOUPCAM TM DC UA1000CA camera. For scanning electron microscopy 50 µl aliquot of the suspension of cleaned valves was placed on aluminium stub, dried on air, coated with a gold in Balzers SCD 004 sputter coater and examined with an FEI Quanta 200 scanning electron microscope (Eindhoven, Netherland) at a working distance of 10 mm and acceleration voltages of 25–30 kV. Measurements of valves, density of striae and areolae in striae were taken for each photographed cell; at least 20 individuals of each taxon were studied. Valve structure terminology follows K rammer & L ange –B ertalot (1986), R ound et al. (1990) and K ulikovskiy et al. (2012, 2016).

: We studied a new freshwater cymbelloid diatom taxon collected from Mongolia with light and scanning electron microscopy. The monotypic genus Vladinikolaevia gen. nov. , based on V. mongolica sp. nov, is described. The new genus is characterized by a combination of morphological features found in two well–known genera such as Cymbella and Encyonema . The raphe system is morphologically–similar to Encyonema but the presence of apical pore fields is similar to the genus Cymbella as presently circumscribed. There are other very interesting peculiarities found in V. mongolica sp. nov. that show it to be a distinct taxon. We discuss the morphology of this new genus in the context of valve morphogenesis and presence of primary and secondary valves. The description of this new genus from Mongolia supports our contention that Asia is home to many endemics, interesting and not yet described cymbelloid taxa.
