Despite the fact that the launching of sputniks by Russia threw the country at large, and educators in particular, into a spasm of extensive proportions, the period of agonizing reappraisal has been largely that of offering lip service, not always very consistent or clear, to one or another of the several philosophies of contemporary education. This book was published under the aegis of the Council for Basic Education in Washington, D.C., a sound and constructive organization dealing with problems in education. They publish a monthly news letter, but this is their first book. Its subject is a program of aims for public schools presented as a statement by eighteen scholars, distinguished in various fields, who come to grips with the realities of basic education. They emphasize their ideas of what a student should have gained after twelve years of public schooling. The book deals with principles rather than details. It

This volume includes discussions not only of the enzymes of polynucleotide metabolism and their structure and function but also discussions of the structure and properties of synthetic and other polynucleotides. The papers are highly technical and will prove to be excellent source material for anyone interested in the complicated details of polynucleotide metabolism. Since this is the basic chemistry of the gene and is responsible for the transmission of hereditary characteristics, it is an extremely important biochemical area. This is not a book which is easily read or understood by the average physician or by the physician with a smattering of knowledge of the biochemistry of nucleic acids. It is written by and for the Ph.D.'s in biochemistry who have specialized in nucleic acid metabolism. It is now recognized that bone-marrow failure rather than hyperhemolysis underlies the crises in sickle-cell disease.1,2Bonemarrow failure has been reported in Cooley's hemolytic anemia,3hereditary spherocytosis,4and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.5Maturation arrest of the neutrophil polymorphonuclear leukocytes has been noted in sickle-cell disease.6Infection has been thought to precipitate bone-marrow aplasia in sickle-cell disease1,2and in hereditary spherocytosis.7The occurrence of "aplastic crisis" in several members of a family has been recorded in hereditary spherocytosis7and in sickle-cell disease.17Erythroblastopenia has been noted during the course of viral pneumonia in patients without hemolytic blood diseases,8and the same communication records eosinophilia in patients who had erythrocytic aplasia after exposure to allergens. The articles selected for abstracting and presentation have been chosen because, in the opinion of your editor, they represent what is being reported. This is not a text book of endocrinology, and this year's literature does not necessarily cover every pertinent field, for which the interested reader is referred to one of the numerous excellent texts published in the past few years. Parenthetically, let me add that a particular effort is made to search out those articles which are not generally available in the Journals received by most American physicians.... The symposium that constitutes this edition deals primarily, but not exclusively, with "primitive" control mechanisms of the cell. Hormonal influences are not extensively treated. Sixteen papers and discussions by prominent research workers are presented at the biochemical level, describing many ideas and problems on the regulation of cell metabolism. Among the substances and mechanisms considered in the papers as playing a regulatory role in cell metabolism are the intracellular concentration of inorganic phosphorus, adenosinediphosphate, enzyme concentration, electron transport, coenzymes, and a "feed-back" concept. This book is by experts, primarily for experts, in this field.

In this book the author attempts to prove that the majority of congenital defects and defective babies can be attributed to the occurrence of stress in one form or the other occurring during the first three months of pregnancy. He offers sixty illustrations of various forms of emotional stress that have allegedly resulted in congenital abnormalities. The author gives examples of excessive pressure on the stomach producing a cleft palate, psoriasis producing a cleft palate, and penicillin rash producing a moron. There are ten things that the author emphasizes that either should be avoided in pregnancy or should be done. These are as follows: Stress should be avoided. No surgical procedures should be performed during pregnancy except emergency surgery. All x-rays and general anesthesia should be avoided. Potent drugs should be avoided, as well as high-altitude flying. If the patient is exposed to any communicable diseases, γ-globulin should be administered.

This is a refreshing book. The formal presentations are for the most part unhackneyed, and the discussions are lively and thoughtful. I found the chapter by Hurst on sexual differences in toxicity of drugs and the one by Paget on the morphological evaluation of toxic action particularly stimulating. (Paget's "routine" histopathology looks fantastically complete, by comparison with American standards!) John Litchfield, the only American at the meeting, supplies another high spot with his thoughtful, off-beat analysis of "screening" for efficacy and toxicity. The volume is also pleasantly brief and can be held comfortably in one hand while one is lying in bed. It is recommended to pharmacologists and to those clinicians concerned with the investigation of new drugs.
