This manuscript reports the perspectives of nurse managers who participated in a study at a regional medical center. The information is reported through verbatim comments that emerged through a discussion of “lessons learned”. Nursing comments are organized as the conversation flowed. The nurse managers that participated in a recently concluded study were most concerned about how any research study will affect their patients and how nurse workflow may be interrupted. Pre-established meeting times (huddles) worked best for education and training. Further, they suggested incentives may be effective; however, recognition as nurse champions and inclusion of nurse voice are preferred.

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between pain and pain related factors associated with peripheral neuropathy and daily life activities in patients receiving chemotherapy. Methods: The study used a descriptive and cross-sectional design to examine 80 patients who came to the outpatient chemotherapy unit of two university hospitals to receive chemotherapy drugs such as taxane, platinum analogs and vinca alkaloids. The data were collected by using face-to-face interview method through “General Information Form”, “S-LANSS Pain Scale” that is a bedside test for distinctive diagnosis of neuropathic pain and “Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ)” which is a scale prepared by the researcher and measures daily activities to evaluate physical disability. Results: In the group with neuropathic pain, HAQ scores ( p = .003; p < .01) and S-LANSS scores ( p = .005; p < .01) of the patients who did not have hand-foot complaints prior to the treatment but experienced hand-foot discomfort with the beginning of chemotherapy treatment, were found to be statistically significantly higher. There was a statistically significant positive relation between HAQ score and S-LANSS pain score at the level of 61.2% ( r = 0.612; p = .001; p < .01). Conclusions: It was concluded that the symptoms of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) and related pain and pain-related factors negatively affect the level of doing daily life activities.

The COVID-19 pandemic bewildered the French population by its impact and particularly affected nursing homes. Older people living in nursing homes were at very high risk of being affected by COVID-19. This case study highlights its impact on resident-family dyad and caregivers’ relationships. The suffering and anger manifested by all, the difficulty in managing the stress of the caregivers, the cognitive and physical deterioration of the residents and their social isolation show us that this unexpected pandemic has not only had psychological consequences on all those involved, but also calls into question the foundations of support for the older people. This pandemic is an opportunity to step back from what has happened and to ask ourselves how we can preserve residents’ quality of life. Organization and measures need to be re-invented to limit and prevent the effects of this COVID-19 pandemic in the event of a resurgence of the virus.

This study aimed to analyze the association between the isolation of Candida species in the oral cavity and the clinical and virulence factors of people living with Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This cross-sectional study, comprising 106 people living with HIV who were evaluated in an HIV-AIDS outpatient clinic in Fortaleza, Northeast of Brazil, data collection were conducted during August and November 2018. A saliva sample was also collected to isolate Candida. The virulence factors of extracellular and hemolytic phospholipase activities in isolated Candida strains were analyzed. The prevalence of oral Candida was 40.6%, and the presence of oral Candida was associated with smoking habits ( p = .005), daily smoking ( p = .026), low weight ( p = .030), history of hospitalization ( p = .014), TCD4 lymphocyte count < 200 cells/mm3 ( p = .018), and detectable viral load ( p = .005). The multivariate analysis revealed that the variables smoking habits ( p = .008), viral load ( p = .011), and body mass index ( p = .011) were associated with the presence of oral Candida. Strong hemolytic and phospholipase activities were, respectively, identified in 74.4% and 72% of the isolated strains, mainly Candida albicans. As a main conclusion, the isolation of Candida from the oral cavity in people living with HIV/AIDS, has a strong association with the use of tobacco, even under anappropriate treatment.

Objective: Explore the healthcare needs of Sudanese refugee women settling in Australia. Background: Refugees from Sudan are the fastest growing community in Australia. Nurses who care for people from the Sudan will be required to be familiar with the needs of this emerging community and offer culturally competent and safe care. Methods: Integrative review of the literature. Results: Sudan is one of the countries in Africa where the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), cutting or circumcision is considered a social norm. This is a deeply rooted traditional cultural practice that is still prevalent in many developing countries. Healthcare professionals in Australia are ill equipped to care for women and children who have undergone this procedure. This paper explores the Sudanese refugee community in Shepparton, Victoria to explore the nursing considerations caring for women affected by FGM within the Australian health care context. Conclusions: There is a need for more education in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional education on the healthcare needs of women who have undergone female genital mutilation in order to provide appropriate care and support for these women.

Conclusions: There is a need for more education in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional education on the \u0000healthcare needs of women who have undergone female genital mutilation in order to provide appropriate care and support for \u0000these women.","PeriodicalId":72616,"journal":{"name":"Clinical nursing studies","volume":"8 1","pages":"40-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48019270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
Objective: Effective practice is increasingly seen as a critical dimension of the professional development of healthcare professionals. Reducing the number of punctures when placing an intravenous (IV) cannula reduces pain and further suffering for the patient. At the same time, the proper technique of IV cannulas save time for healthcare providers. Background: The method of securing venous access by intravenous cannula is part of the teaching of medical and nursing study programs. Critical thinking is the essential skill necessary to assess any information, explain the causes, and the ability to solve problems. University education develops this skill through strategic teaching of simulation methods. Methods: In connection with new information of the method of IV cannulas by “magic movement”, we decided to use the Core model for critical reflection designed by Cottrell (2010), to evaluate new techniques in preclinical education of students from general medicine and nursing on IV cannulation in simulation laboratories. Results: The results have shown that student performance levels will be increased by applying critical thinking and simulation as an option for integrated preclinical training for future healthcare professionals. Conclusions: Innovative method of introducing peripheral IV cannula provides a framework to guide curriculum development and teaching strategies as well as to support the advancement of cognitive and empirical skills of healthcare professionals. A new technique for applying “magic movement” of IV cannulation, we innovate the curriculum of basic nursing practices while contributing to the development of evidence-based practice.
