Engaging children and caregivers in exposure and response-prevention (ERP) is a critical element in effective treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in young children. Several clinical challenges pose barriers to participation and implementation of successful treatment such as specific parenting behaviors (e.g., accommodation of obsessions and compulsions) and child motivation for treatment. The authors offer strategies to address common clinical challenges in engaging young children with OCD and to promote effective implementation of ERP with children and caregivers.

Coronavirus 2019 (SARS-CoV-2; COVID-19) has significant mental health and neuropsychological consequences, but data are insufficient on these specific implications of COVID-19, especially for Indian American patients. Few studies have critically explored risk factors and neuropsychological assessment considerations from a cultural and linguistic perspective, including how they impact the evaluation process for Indian Americans. The present paper focuses on cultural and linguistic considerations for case conceptualization, ethical challenges for best practices, and a specific example with a middle-aged Indian American woman. The need for a greater contextual understanding is emphasized as a step forward in establishing methodological and procedural guidelines for working with patients of Indian descent in the United States.

Building Compassion Fatigue Resilience: Awareness, Prevention, and Intervention for Pre-Professionals and Current Practitioners.

Compassion fatigue (CF), or the extreme stress and burnout from helping others, is widely considered to be harmful to professional well-being. Due to a lack of awareness and education around CF in healthcare professionals, mental health clinicians may feel particularly unsure about how to treat these common symptoms. There is considerable symptom overlap between CF and several other presentations, including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, insomnias, and substance abuse disorders. Evidenced-based assessments designed to measure symptoms of CF are discussed, as well as screening measures for overlapping presentations. Treating fellow clinicians and pre-professionals comes with unique ethical considerations, most notably privacy concerns that may impact professional development. The culture of training programs does not adequately prepare pre-professionals for psychological well-being. As psychologists, it is our ethical responsibility to advocate for changes in graduate education and at our training sites. By utilizing evidenced-based strategies, such as acceptance and commitment therapy, we can assist professionals and pre-professionals in building resilience as they navigate a career in the helping professions.

Multidisciplinary Approach to Brain Fog and Related Persisting Symptoms Post COVID-19.

A third of patients who developed COVID-19 experience a persisting, diverse array of symptoms including respiratory, neurological, and psychiatric complaints referred to as post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC). Symptoms can last for months after the original infection and appear unrelated to the severity of the initial illness, which suggests that even patients who did not require extensive interventions at the acute stage may experience new and/or long-term symptoms. Brain fog is a colloquial term for a common complaint among patients with PASC and generally implies cognitive impairment in domains of attention and processing speed. There are multiple hypotheses for etiologies and explanations of mechanisms contributing to brain fog in PASC. In this paper, we describe some of the mechanisms associated with brain fog post COVID-19 and provide readers with treatment recommendations that encompass cognition, mood disorders, sleep disorders, and neuroinflammation.

A Trauma-Informed Approach to Assessment, Case Conceptualization, and Treatment Planning for Youth Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence.

Children's exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) is a prevalent public health problem that can result in serious mental health impairments, including traumatic stress. These can emerge early and persist across development. IPV early in life has also been described as a "gateway exposure" to other forms of adversity and trauma. Children and families impacted by IPV have complex needs that complicate assessment and intervention. This paper highlights these issues and reviews best practices in assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning as they pertain to the treatment of IPV-exposed children. A case vignette illustrates the complex nature of IPV and application of best practices by telling the story of Isaiah, a 13-year-old boy with an extensive history of IPV exposure and co-occurring adversity and trauma.
