Arthroplasty can be a successful treatment for arthritis even in cases of severe axial deviation of the knee. Since significant bone loss is often present in these cases, the technique and extent of the resection is very important. In this paper we review our series and compare it with solutions proposed by other authors, focusing our attention on the techniques of resection and replacement of lost bone employed in order to achieve optimal axial alignment and anchoring of the prosthetic components.

The glomus tumor, characterized by the classic trio of tumefaction, acute pain on palpation, and sensitivity to cold, is localized most commonly in the hand and quite rarely in the knee. It occurs most frequently in subjects between the ages of 20 and 40, and its cause is unknown. Masson divided glomus tumors into 4 main types: angiomatous, stromal, nervous, and myxoid, according to the histo-pathological features present. The authors believe that the histological appearance may be affected by the functional phase of the tumor at the moment of surgery: with sphincters closed, meaning very little dilatation of the venous collection areas, or with sphincters open, meaning considerable dilatation of the venous collection areas due to increased hematic flow.

The authors report on 28 patients with degenerative arthritis of the hip who underwent intertrochanteric osteotomy of the femur between 1970 and 1978. Two subjects were operated on bilaterally, bringing the total number of hips to 30. The follow-up period averaged 11.8 years. All patients underwent thorough clinical and radiographic examination as well as basography and computed electrogoniometry. The basographic examination consists of analysis of the temporal phases of gait, revealing angular abnormalities of the various joint components of the lower limbs which occur during walking. Processing the data by computer shows any anomaly present in the lower limbs. The results of treatment were good for the most part, and thorough functional examination by computer often revealed a poor radiographic result corresponding to a better clinical result.

A-cyanoacrylate proves to be an advanced means of osteosynthesis. It is particularly indicated for short bone fragments in the articular and comminuted fractures, where a perfect anatomic reduction is required. It is shown to be non-toxic for bone and surrounding tissues and to be endowed with a remarkable chemical bond. It is easily applied and inexpensive. The results are very interesting and stimulate continuation of the studies. The authors think a-cyanoacrylate (or a derivative) is the future of biological osteosynthesis.

The authors describe the clinical appearance of Ledderhose disease and emphasize the association with Dupuytren disease. They report on a series of patients treated at the 2nd Orthopedic Unit of University of Florence and describe the operating technique used. They believe that the procedure of removal of nodules must always be performed in association with careful exeresis of normal tissue, employing total aponeurectomy only in revision surgery.

They also demonstrate the reliability of a preliminary systematic study with bone scan and CT, which are indispensable to early diagnosis and correct surgical procedure.
