Isolated rabbit heart with independent perfusion of a small left ventricular area was used to study the effect of manganese ions on aconitine-induced ventricular tachycardia. Manganese chloride 4 mM in Locke solution exhibited a constant preventive or suppressive effect versus aconitum-induced rhythm disorders. It is concluded that the interpretation of aconitine cardiotoxic effects on the sole basis of phase 3 modifications require further evidence, and that an increased diastolic depolarization rate may well explain, at least in this experimental model, the genesis of arrhythmias induced by this drug.

We have recorded the action potentials of muscle fibres of External Oblique in anaesthetized rabbits in supine and horizontal position. During head-up tilting the inspiratory activity is inhibited and the abdominal activity is excited. Both these two responses are reflexly mediated through vagal afferent fibres. The positive pressure was chosen as to determine a shift in end-expiratory volume similar to that induced by the head-up tilting. Also at positive pressure breathing (PPB) the abdominal activity increases but less than during head-up tilting. This result seems to indicate the importante of the proprioceptive afferents of the external oblique during the vertical posture. The blockade of vagal nervous conduction markedly reduces the abdominal activity both during tilting and P.P.B. and similar results are obtained either by "total" or "partial" vagal blockade. Therefore it seems possible to conclude that both these two reflexes (introduced by head-up tilting and PPB) be due to the activation of the same receptors (pulmonary stretch receptors).

In order to compare the disposition of D-galactose and D-glucose in various organs of the rat, we have measured the amount of 14C-galactose and 14C-glucose present in the enteric canal, blood, muscle and liver, 2h. after the oral administration of the labelled esoses. Our results show that the two esoses are ebsorbed almost completely and to the same extent by two hours after their administration, Galactose has a longer half-life than glucose, being more slowly utilized in the synthesis of glycogen in liver and muscle.
