This paper explores the distinctions between searching and exploring when looking for information. We propose that, while traditional search engines work well in supporting search behaviour, they are more limited in assisting those who are looking to explore new information, especially when the exploration task is ill-defined. We ran a pilot study using two systems: one based on a traditional database search engine, and the other -- a highly innovative, engaging and playful system called iFISH -- that we designed specifically to support exploration through the use of user preferences. We looked for evidence to support the concept that exploration requires a different kind of interaction. The initial results report a positive response to our exploration system and indicate the differences in preferences amongst users for systems that match their searching or exploring behaviours.

Helping People Help Themselves grew out of David Ellerman's ten years at the World Bank— and particularly out of his three years as advisor and speechwriter for Joseph Stiglitz during Stiglitz's tumultuous term as the Bank's Chief Economist. The book provides a structural critique of the World Bank's approach to development assistance—but the main purpose is to lay the intellectual foundations for an alternative approach. The book takes a broad interdisciplinary approach drawing from educational theory, management theory, community organizing, psychology, and philosophy. While many thinkers are discussed, there is a focus on eight individuals who have wrestled with the fundamental conundrum of trying to give external help that promotes (rather than thwarts) self-help. Those individuals are: Albert Hirschman, John Dewey, Paulo Freire, E. F. Schumacher, Douglas McGregor, Carl Rogers, Saul Alinsky, and Soren Kierkegaard. It can involve changes in data structures, procedure calls, communication protocols, user interface panels, database records, printing forms, etc. For these reasons, changes have to be performed non only in business- and managerialoriented applications but also in mission critical software, development frameworks, CASE tools, etc. Please note that, the first instances of the problem are already occurring in these days, this fact cannot be neglected delaying the time for solving it. These aspects are discussed and addressed by the papers of this session, confirming the complexity of problem and the fact that the solution is surely a very time consuming and error prone task. Thus, the related costs must be covered by benefits, etc. The papers represent an interesting and very useful collection of approaches for managing the Year 2000 problem. Some of these also report the point of views and the strategies applied by many organizations.
