Couples who space their births 3 to 5 years apart increase their children's chances of survival, and mothers are more likely to survive, too, according to new research. Many women want to space births longer than they currently do. Programs can do more to help them achieve the birth intervals they want.
In developing countries each year more than half a million women die from maternal causes. Nearly all of these deaths could be prevented. Efforts to prevent maternal deaths from one major cause--complications of unsafe abortion--are crucial but inadequate in most of the world. Providing appropriate medical care immediately could save many thousands of women's lives. Offering family planning could prevent many future unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions.
While AIDS seizes the headlines, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) create devastation of their own. In women STDs can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, causing lifelong pain, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy, which can kill. Children are born with blinding eye infections. Men are left infertile. People die of advanced stages of syphilis. Furthermore, STDs multiply the transmissibility of HIV, the AIDS virus, as much as ninefold.
