Studies on the transmission of R plasmid by conjugation between enterobacteria and vibrio or related bacteria were reviewed. The majority of the reports confirmed successful transmission from enterobacteria to Vibrio cholerae and related species, although the transmission frequencies were extremely low and the transmitted R plasmid was very unstable except for thermosensitive kanamycin plasmid and usual R plasmid coexisting with P plasmid. Strains of V. cholerae and Aeromonas liquefaciens as well as A. salmonicida bearing R plasmid were detected in nature. R plasmid was relatively unstable in V. cholerae strains with which transmission of R plasmid to enterobacteria was confirmed. At present, only 3 R plasmids have been obtained from naturally occurring strains of V. cholerae. Although the 2 European plasmids belong to the C incompatibility group with 98 megadalton closed covalent circular DNA molecule, one plasmid belongs to the J group with more than 25 megadalton molecular weight, and no CCC of satelite DNA was detected in bacteria harboring this plasmid.

Use of the penicillins in patients may result in a variety of side effects in addition to the well known occasional allergic reactions. Some of these side effects may be quite serious. Treatment with the various penicillins, expecially in the large amounts presently prescribed, may be attended by immunologic reactions, such as nephritis, and by direct toxic effects which may involve the blood platelets, the neurones of the central nervous system, and perhaps the parenchymal cells of the liver.

Enterotoxigenic strain of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 14458) was grown under various conditions with constant shaking to determine the requirements for maximum toxin production. It was evident that 3% tryptic soy broth, 3% NZ-Amine NAK + 3% casein hydrolysate, 3% NZ-Amine NAK + 1% yeast extract, and 3% NZ-Amine NAK + 1% yeast extract + 0.2% glucose are most available toxin production media. But concentration of glucose could strictly triggered the enterotoxin producing efficiency. When glucose concentration was less than 0.5%, although with higher yield, the toxin production was delayed for certain period of time. However, if glucose concentration was up to more than 0.5%, the enterotoxin production was almost inhibited. Some metabolites of glucose to elucidate the inhibitory effect have also investigated. Our results indicated that glycerol and citric acid inhibited the toxin production directly, while the inhibitory effect of lactic acid and acetic acid were due to those acidic metabolites, decreased the pH value of media, and adversely suppressed the bacterial growth.

Serum samples from psoriatic patients were subjected to quantitation of serum IgA, IgG and IgM levels and screening of tissue autoantibodies including ANA, GPA, MTA and SMA. Serum IgA was found to be significantly elevated and incidences of ANA and GPA were also increased. Their significance and possible mechanism were discussed.

All cells, whatever their origin, function in an essentially inorganic environment. In this environment, metal cations play an important role. Attempts were made in the present study to determine if different amounts of five metal ions (MG++, Fe++, Mn++, Zn++, Ca++) are needed for secondary metabolism of Clostridium perfringens than are needed for primary metabolism. Both the vegetative growth stage (primary metabolic stage) and spore stage (secondary metabolic stage) of Clostridium perfringens were studied. Endeavors were made to detect the effects of metal ions, if any, on growth and sporulation of the organisms. Mg++ was required for growth of vegetative cells and maintenance of normal cellular morphology, Fe++ was needed for sporulation as well as for vegetative growth, but the amount needed for spore formation was higher than that needed for growth. Ca++ was essential to refractility and heat-resistance of spores. Zn++ inhibited both growth and sporulation, if the Mg++ concentration was low. Mn++ was required for neither growth nor sporulation. For maximum heat-resistance of the spores, Ca++ plus unidentified organic substances were required.

A patient with cervical carcinoma was found to have selective IgA deficiency. The intact cell-mediated immunity, normal levels of IgG and IgM, and the absence of serum and salivary IgA established the diagnosis. Contrary to those of normal persons, salivary IgM was elevated and salivary IgA was not detectable in this patient. The patient had no signs attributable to IgA deficiency, but she always had dryness of the mouth. The association between cervical carcinoma and selective IgA deficiency was discussed.
