Increasing public concern is focusing on healthcare providers as a primary source of medical waste. As nurses practice in expanded roles in a variety of settings, attention must be paid to teaching them how to be ecologically responsible by assessing the environmental impact of the services they provide and providing ways to reduce the volume of waste.
Elder abuse has become a problem of growing concern to healthcare providers, including registered nurses. Two descriptive surveys were completed that related to the knowledge and experience of registered nurses with the problem. Registered nurses reported experience with the problem but indicated a lack of knowledge. Nurse educators must provide education on the topic of elder abuse that includes what constitutes elder abuse, the scope of the problem, the law and implications for practice, how to assess and intervene, and resources available. This will ensure that registered nurses in all settings have the knowledge to address this major healthcare issue.
With the release of Acute Pain and Cancer Pain Guidelines from the federal government, many healthcare agencies will be instituting programs to improve pain management. The authors describe a pilot project in acute pain management that did not yield desired results. On the basis of this experience and through a review of the literature, information is provided to staff development educators about problems and issues in planning and executing a program in pain management using structure, process, and outcome as a framework.
Teleconferencing is considered an alternative to traditional educational programming and can be accomplished through various methods. In this article, the authors explain audiographics, a form of teleconferencing that combines audio conferencing with a personal computer-based visual conferencing system. The authors discuss the system, the planning process, and the implementation and evaluation of audiographics during an 8-week continuing education course.
Addressing the extensive health needs of linguistic minority populations often requires the development of culturally appropriate health education materials. This article describes the preparation and evaluation of health education materials on medication that were tailored for the Latino and Southeast Asian clients. The culturally sensitive adaptation of materials and the involvement of community representatives are critical steps in this process. The number of requests for these materials illustrated the widespread need for this type of media.
