In order to study the various land configurations and the impact of soil and water conservation measures in terms of improving the in soil characterstics, soil nutrients and reduction in soil and nutrient losses, three land configurations were studied for soil-water management, viz., cultivation along the slope with opening of tide furrow (T 1 ), contour cultivation with opening of alternate furrow (T 2 ) and contour cultivation with opening of ridges and furrows (T 3 ). The present investigation revealed that the treatment T 3 was more prominent and favourably influenced the soil characterstics, soil nutriestsdue to the drastic change in the runoff hydrograph characteristics and reduction soil loss and nutrient losses, followed by treatment T 2 over the treatment T 1 . In the context of above results, it is concluded that the various land configurations measures is the need of day in rainfed agriculture for the management of erratic and vagarious rainfall and improving the in soil characterstics and soil nutrients under the changing climatic conditions. The runoff occurred in all the treatments were due to second storm only. While comparing the peak discharge among all the treatment, it was found that, the treatment T 1 had highest peak discharge 11.7 lps followed by treatment T 2 (10.7 lps) and treatment T 3 (2.03 lps). It was found that in treatment T 2 nitrogen (N) loss reduced from 21.82 kg ha to 2.4kg ha (i.e.89.00 %) over the treatment T 1 and in treatment T 3 it was reduced upto 0.59 kg ha (i.e. 95.46%) over T 1 .There was same trend was observed in case of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K).

A reconnaissance soil survey was undertaken in sugarcane growing soils of Medak district of Telangana to assess the characteristics of soils, evaluate the land by identifying potentials and limitations to suggest suitable management options in the perspective of developed land use decision for effective utilization of resources. Soil samples (128 surface and 128 subsurface) were collected at a depth of 0-15cm and 15-30cm and analyzed for morphological, physical, physico-chemical and available major nutrient status. All the surface and subsurface soils well developed structural variation and exhibited granular to sub angular blocky structure in surface and sub angular blocky to angular blocky in subsurface horizon. The textural classes of the district are sandy loam, sandy clay loam, sandy clay to clay loam and clay. The consistence of soils varied from loose to hard, very friable to firm, non-sticky, nonplastic to very sticky, very plastic in dry, moist and wet conditions, respectively. The pH ranges between extremely acidic to moderately alkaline in reaction and EC was non-saline. The organic carbon content ranged from low to high in surface soils and low to medium in subsurface soils. The soils are low to medium in available N, medium to high in P and K in surface soils. Major soil constraints include texture, erosion, slope, depth, drainage and low organic carbon, low availability of N and micronutrients. If the improvements could be done, there is scope that the area under marginally suitable may be converted to moderately suitable to highly suitable for the cultivation of different crops.

The X-ray diffraction pattern of soil clay fraction of one red soil pedon from Maize Research Station, Vagarai of Dindigul district, one black soil pedon from Cotton Research Station, Veppanthatai (Perambalur district) and one red laterite soil from Dryland Agricultural Research Station, Chettinad of Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu was carried out to distinguish the distribution of clay minerals by using X-ray diffraction method and the mineral composition was assessed semiquantitatively. The black soil pedon revealed the dominance of smectite in association with small quantities of illite and kaolinite. The red soil pedon clay faction was “mixed” with smectite, illite and kaolinite type of clay minerals. The dominant clay mineral was kaolinite with small quantities of illite in red laterite soils pedon. The chemical composition of soils exhibited the siliceous nature with broad and large silica/sesquioxides and silica/ alumina ratios. The wider ratios of SiO 2 /R 2 O 3 and SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 (4.64 to 5.61 and 5.75 to 6.94) were found in the black soils pedon followed by red soils pedon (4.55 to 5.01 and 7.78 to 9.64), respectively where smectite and illite were the dominant clay minerals. The narrow silica/ sesquioxides and silica/alumina ratios (2.23 to 2.56 and 4.13 to 5.37) were found in red laterite soils where Kaolinite was dominant clay mineral in semi arid tropical region of Tamil Nadu.
