Given their professed self-image as public servants, it is impossible for professional health-care associations to argue consistently against their membership's engulfment by Medicare, against the encroachment on our practices by governmentally empowered third parties, against the violation of our inalienable right of association, and against the growth of governmental agencies that seek to control the distribution of the "nation's health-care resources." If we are to reverse the trend toward total government control of health care in the name of "The Public," doctors must learn to defend their absolute, natural right to their own lives. Doctors must learn why providing health care is a right of doctors, not a privilege that they should have to bargain with politicians for. A necessary step is to learn what the public-service principle actually leads to and why it is such a destructive concept.

This paper analyzes the concept of informed consent in dentistry from a bioethical and philosophical perspective. It is the author's contention that informed consent, as presently used in daily practice, might be illusory at best. After analyzing the concept in general to derive a philosophical underpinning, this basis is applied to common dental scenarios in order to illustrate an approach that is respectful of the patient's autonomy and that can achieve a truly meaningful informed consent.

Management of a dental practice is challenging. The implementation of a management control system will improve practice performance. This system consists of planning practice goals and objectives, gathering information about the practice activity related to the planned goals and objectives, and taking corrective actions to remedy deviations from the practice plan. Three types of control, preventive, concurrent, and feedback, are presented with an application to the dental practice. Within each type of control a variety of administrative functions are discussed, such as financial analysis, employee supervision, and quality assurance.

Practice brochures are used by many dentists as a means of attracting patients to the office and providing them information. Creating an effective brochure requires careful selection of content, clear writing, and attractive format. Effective distribution is also essential if the brochure is to accomplish its purpose. A survey of practices using brochures revealed interesting findings on these various aspects of the practice brochure as a marketing tool.
