There have been several electron microscopic studies on the inner vation of external hair cells in the guinea pig. Engström and Spoendlin have described two types of nerve endings. Recent stud ies by Smith and Sjöstrand have confirmed these observations and revealed the presence of other kinds of nerve endings. Observations on the cat 4 and the rat" indicate that the nerve terminals in the external hair cells in all three animals may be similar.
