The seven points of these hypoglycaemia guidelines, together with their explanatory text, were drawn up by a group of 25 leading health professionals and breast-feeding counsellors. Midwives on the group included Catherine McCormick and Melanie Every, RCM; Dora Henschel, MBE, Sally Inch, Ann Newman. Professor Mary Renfrew and Penelope Samuel. The initiative was co-ordinated by the National Childbirth Trust, with initial funding from the Department of Health. The guidelines have been endorsed by the Royal College of Midwives, the Neonatal Nurses' Association, UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative and the British Association of Perinatal Medicine, and are supported by the Department of Health. Copies are available from NCT Maternity Sales Ltd, 239 Shawbridge Street, Glasgow G43 1QN; tel: 0141 636 0600.

Can being at work make you sick? With ever-increasing workloads and constant pressure for change, midwives will understand all too clearly what Trades Union Congress General Secretary John Monks recently called "a pressure cooker work environment". Recent surveys by the TUC and a number of other trade unions show that employers are failing to take the matter of workplace stress seriously-notwithstanding the devastating effects it can have on the lives of their staff.

Trinidad & Tobago are the two most southerly of the Caribbean islands off the coast of Venezuela. Trinidad is industrial, having natural deposits of oil, gas and bitumen, while Tobago is a tropical holiday island, sometimes known as Robinson Crusoe Island. The population of 1.3 million represents races from Africa, India, Europe and Asia, who live and work together harmoniously; Trinidadian women are renowned for their beauty, resulting from this rich mix. The centre of Trinidad is heavily forested and-apart from the capital, Port-of-Spain-the towns are small and rural in character. Fruit grows abundantly, especially mangoes, bananas, pineapples, citrus fruits, paw-paw and coconuts.
