postoperative infections, regardless of whether or not they are directly related to surgery, have a dramatic impact on the morbidity, mortality, and cost of surgery. With an emphasis on prevention and treatment, the author reviews infectious complications that may be encountered with any type of surgery and those that are unique to certain procedures and settings.

Although the acute care hospital cannot provide care for terminally ill patients who are not receiving active therapy, a hospice unit has much to offer such patients. Since the elderly and the chronically ill also can benefit from palliative and supportive care, a long-term skilled-care facility is an ideal setting for a hospice unit. In this article, the authors discuss the various services provided by a hospice unit, where the emphasis is on care rather than cure.

In this article, the author presents a brief history of how the law came into being and outlines the essential elements that the patient must be told in order for you to stay within the law.
