Tried recently to call your doctor's office to get a prescription refilled? Chances are you waited on hold long enough to memorize the words to Copacabana or learned the name of every front-line worker through three rounds of phone tag. From large health care systems to small doctors' offices across the country, each must respond on a daily basis to an influx of patient inquiries.
Quality of care and the bottom line are often seen as trade-offs. But this can be a false dichotomy. As we shall see, many of the factors impacted by employee engagement--a term that encompasses trust, loyalty, motivation and cooperative spirit--contribute to both quality of care and financial performance.
The medical arms race is back. Hospitals are competing vigorously around new technology, spending millions on da Vinci surgical systems, Gamma knives, and high-tech heart implants. Many new technologies require large investments in specialized facilities and technology, pushing up capital investment and health costs. By now, the health care industry is feeling the effects of the implementation of the Standards for Electronic Transactions promulgated under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
