First Communication: Analyses of M. pectoralis superficialis, M. quadriceps femoris, Cerebrum, Cerebellum, and Spinal Cord. The fresh matter level in the M. pectoralis superficialis of turkey was found to increase by a factor of 915, between the first and 224th days from hatching. DNA went up by a factor of 169. The protein: DNA quotient was increased 8.5 times. RNA concentrations in the same muscle went up from 2.65 +/- 0.06 to 6.02 +/- 0.30 mg/g of fresh matter, within the first and seventh days from hatching, and then dropped to 3.61 +/- 0.21 mg/g of fresh matter up to the 14th day, to 2.98 +/- 0.11 mg/g by the 28th day, and to 1.16 +/- 0.05 mg/g by the 224th day. The M. quadriceps femoris exhibited a 111-fold fresh matter increase, from the first through 224th days, while DNA went up by a factor of 44. The cerebrum exhibited a 3.9-fold increase of fresh matter and a 5.2-fold increase of DNA, between the first and 224th day. The cerebellum rises were 6.4-fold or 3.2-fold. Spinal cord values for the same period of time were 27.8-fold for fresh matter and 13.2-fold for DNA.

Use of molecular cloned viral genomes for studies into interrelationship between type D retroviruses from monkey and human cells. 利用分子克隆病毒基因组研究猴和人细胞中的D型逆转录病毒之间的相互关系。

Type D retroviruses constitute a group of RNA tumor viruses so far isolated exclusively from primates. 4 groups of isolates are known to date (Mason-Pfizer virus, agents of simian acquired immunodeficiency syndrome--SAIDS, endogenous viruses of Old World and New World monkeys, and some isolates from cell lines--PMF virus). The members of the latter group are well characterized at protein-chemical and immunological levels. Briefly described in this paper are the results of our studies into the molecular structure of the viral genome of PMFV in relation to other members of the group (SAIDS-retrovirus/NE, MPMV, and SRV-1).

[Infection model for the reproduction of eperythrozoonosis in splenectomized SPF primary piglets]. [脾切除SPF原代仔猪附红体病繁殖的感染模型]。

Reported in this paper is an infection experiment in which whole blood infected with Eperythrozoon (Ep.) suis was applied to bacterioscopically Ep. suis negative SPF primary piglets for the purpose of doubtless diagnosis of eperythrozoonosis (EEZ) of swine. EEZ could thus be clinically, bacterioscopically, haematologically, biochemically, pathologico-anatomically, and histologically reproduced. Such experimental infection, on top of splenectomy of EEZ-suspicious store pigs, was found to be an additional step for adequate diagnosis on the basis of animal experiments. Immediate and reliable diagnosis of EEZ was found to be generally possible solely by clinical, bacterioscopic, and haematological examinations.

[Different transactivation processes in two bovine leukemia virus producing cell lines]. 两种牛白血病病毒产生细胞系的不同反激活过程

Comparative studies were conducted through more than six months into quantitative of bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) antigen of FLC/BLV 44 and its FLC/BLV 44-4 subline by means of an enzyme immuno-assay (EIA), using monoclonal antibodies against gp51 and p24. Synthesis of gp51 (factors of two to six) and of p24 (factor of two) by FLC/BLV 44 was clearly higher than that by FLC/BLV 44-4. The transactivation status in either line was determined by transfer of the beta-galactosidase indicator organ under transcription control of BLV-LTR (in pBLV beta Gal plasmid). Transient experiments showed beta-galactosidase activity in the FLC/BLV 44 to be clearly higher than that in subline FLC/BLV 44-4. There is obviously in both cell lines a close correlation between intensity of BLV antigen synthesis and transactivation processes.

[Several methods for determining total titers of free alpha-amino acids in body fluids]. 【测定体液中游离α -氨基酸总滴度的几种方法】。

Comparisons were made among different variants of ninhydrin reaction to determine overall titres of free alpha amino acids in body fluids. Included were para-benzoquinone, 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid, and 2,4-dinitro-1-fluorobenzene (DNFB). The best reproducibility of results was recorded from DNFB which can be used, as well, for analysis of milk or rumen juice.

Two cows each received intraruminal applications of 1.0 g/kg B.W. of butyric acid or sodium butyrate, for three weeks running, before daily applications were increased up to 2.0 kg/B.W., within one week. Resulting alterations primarily included increase in acidosis or alkalosis, whereas the typical symptoms of ketosis were lacking. Signs of impaired liver function were to some extent recordable in response to sodium butyrate.

Pregnancy diagnosis by milk progesterone on days 18, 22, and 24 postbreeding in dairy cows. 奶牛配种后第18、22、24天用乳黄体酮诊断妊娠。

Milk samples were collected from 91 dairy cows on days 18, 22, and 24 postbreeding. The progesterone values of these samples were assayed, using enzyme-immuno-assay for pregnancy diagnosis. These animals were classified by nonpregnant (low progesterone values, 5 ng/ml or less) and pregnant (high progesterone values, more than 5 ng/ml). The accuracy of diagnosis on days 18, 22, and 24 postbreeding were 56%, 78%, and 79% for pregnant cows and 90%, 93%, and 93% for nonpregnant animals. The sampling date had a significant effect on diagnostic accuracy (P less than 0.05).

Information recorded from structural development of kidney in swine foetuses of different age and in piglets together with functional data has shown that, notwithstanding progressing maturation, the capacity of renal corpuscles and tubules in piglets was less developed than in other species. Milk deficit or insufficient drinking water or medication may be considerable burdens on the kidney of newborn piglets and may cause stress-related damage.

Sequential changes in plasma progesterone, total oestrogens and corticosteroids in cow throughout pregnancy and around parturition. 奶牛妊娠和分娩前后血浆孕酮、总雌激素和皮质激素的顺序变化。

Blood samples were taken thrice a week for 2 weeks from 33 pregnant cows in 9 groups, 1 month apart. In addition, blood samples were collected twice daily 1 week from 8 cows before parturition. Plasma progesterone and total oestrogens were quantified by validated radioimmunoassays and total corticosteroids by a competitive protein binding technique. During the 1st 3 month of pregnancy, no remarkable changes were observed from the 3 hormones studied. From the 4th month on, concentrations of progesterone and total corticosteroids decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) and remained fairly constant until the 9th month. Values of total oestrogens increased significantly (P less than 0.05) from the 4th to 6th months and stayed unchanged afterwards. Progesterone levels in periparturient cows decreased linearly (P less than 0.01) during 3 days preceding delivery. Concentrations of total oestrogens rose sharply from day -5 and peaked at calving. Values of total corticosteroids increased dramatically on the 6th day and 24 hours before parturition. The results obtained suggest that in contrast to studies cited earlier plasma corticosteroids could play a key role for triggering parturition in cows.
