Many books on indexing cover how to index medieval kings and queens, popes, bishops, and other members of the elite. But a whole swath of people do not have neat titles and will not be found in national biographical dictionaries. Using her expertise as both a medieval historian and an indexer, Jolanta Komornicka looks at the naming practices for the medieval masses, specifically the rise of the byname: what it was, how it relates to the surname, and how to index it.

The first in-person Society of Indexers conference for four years had a very practical orientation, focusing on opportunities for professional development and encouraging attendees to venture out of their comfort zones. Through a series of plenary and breakout sessions it gave an insight into different kinds of client and different kinds of publication, as well as covering indexing software (Index-Manager) and even looking at the differences and similarities between indexing and crossword setting. New indexers were well catered for throughout the day, including with a dedicated session full of practical advice for those embarking on a new career as a book indexer. Above all, it provided a day of total immersion in all things indexing in the company of like-minded colleagues, and opportunities for the networking that is such an important part of a conference and cannot be effectively replicated in the online environment.

Within the indexing societies, the achievements of outstanding members of the profession are recognised by a variety of awards. These awards are often presented during the societies’ annual conferences and are duly reported in The Indexer throughout the year in conference reports. They are gathered together here for an overview of the awards and their latest recipients in 2023.

The Indexer forty years ago (April 1984)
Pub Date : 2024-03-01 DOI: 10.3828/index.2023.59
Hazel K. Bell
Hazel Bell, editor of The Indexer from 1978 to 1995, reflects on the content of the journal 40 years ago. In this issue, she travels back to April 1984, a time when, although computers were beginning to be used on indexing projects, index cards, and even index slips, were still very common, as described in several articles in this issue. Reflections on past issues are a regular feature in the journal. You can look further back in time with the ‘ The Indexer forty years ago’ series, which started in the September 2021 issue, or ‘ The Indexer thirty years ago’ series, which was published from 1991 to 2008.

The history of stoplists: lists of words not indexed
Pub Date : 2024-03-01 DOI: 10.3828/index.2023.56
B. Weinberg
The concept of the stoplist – a list of the words not indexed – is related to indexable matter, to the arrangement of subentries in indexes, and to search engine optimization. Stoplists were thought to have been developed in the 1950s in conjunction with automatic indexing, but a fifteenth-century Hebrew concordance to the Bible, Me’ir Nativ , contains a stoplist that is very similar to modern ones, consisting of function words such as prepositions. Since the Hebrew concordance was modeled on the Latin biblical concordance of Arlottus, which does not contain a stoplist, Me’ir Nativ must be regarded as the first example of this structure. Although stopwords were omitted from the earliest Latin concordances (without listing them), subsequent theological debate about the meanings of Latin function words led to the compilation of special concordances of such words. Current research by the author focuses on the importance of similar small words to the Masoretes, who were concerned about preserving an accurate text of the Hebrew Bible, and may possibly have had an index of such words.

Mondeca for thesaurus, autotagging and ontology management in a public health statistics platform Mondeca
Pub Date : 2023-12-20 DOI: 10.3828/index.2023.44
Glenda Browne, Helen Moore
HealthStats NSW ( www.healthstats.nsw.gov.au ) is a public platform of complex health statistics that displays information on the health of the New South Wales population taken from many data sources. The HealthStats NSW major enhancement project uses Mondeca software to create a thesaurus and ontology which improve search results and are used for automatic webpage creation to assist ‘storytelling’ and navigation. Improving the efficiency of managing content and automating Web content production frees up time and effort of specialised health statisticians and epidemiologists to develop new content and add value to existing content. This paper explores the creation of the thesaurus and its use for autotagging, creation of the ontology component and its use for webpage creation, tweaking of the automated system, and future options for the project.

The first indexes? Eusebius’s canon tables
Pub Date : 2023-12-20 DOI: 10.3828/index.2023.46
Jolanta N. Komornicka
The early origins of the index owe much to the development of the codex and the history of early Christian biblical texts. This article explores the Christian and book context of the canon tables created by Eusebius of Caesarea, suggesting that what looks at first like a list of numbers was in fact an early form of index and used as such by its readers.

Metadata at The New York Times : organizing and leveraging news content from 1851 to today

The New York Times has been a leader in metadata since the birth of The New York Times Index in 1913. Today, a team of taxonomists uses natural-language processing and a human-in-the-loop model to organize, analyze, and push content to readers. Looking to the future, the taxonomy team hopes to free up resources with the help of new technologies so that the metadata practices already in place can be expanded to other areas beyond core news content.
