Scholars from anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and linguistics, as well as other academic disciplines approach the questions of discourse analysis. While there is wide variability in these approaches, most agree that internal coherence is one of the most important features of discourse and that some variety of the propositional calculus is the most appropriate means for accounting for that coherence. I present data that suggests that propositional reasoning varies with culture and thus it is a poor candidate for the basis of a universal discourse structure. On the other hand, syllogistic structures seem relatively consistent across language and culture boundaries and therefore indicate that such a universal structure is possible.

The 1988 Presidential campaign in the United States, like all political contests, reveals a struggle for power through the manipulation of symbols. The focus of this paper is the role of women as symbols and as symbolically manipulated in the political discourse of the 1988 Republican Presidential campaign. Two central issues are discussed: the construction of “women's issues,” including abortion, child care, and employment; second, the Willie Horton campaign strategy. This discussion shows that the manipulation of women as symbols in this political discourse relies upon images of women defined essentially by their sexual and procreative functions and their relation to male concerns.

One of the major research interests of critical medical anthropology is the examination of Western biomedicine. The concepts of discourse and genealogy elaborated in the writing of Michel Foucault are particularly useful in this task. In addition, the notion of discursive structure defines a unit of investigation well suited to the anthropological examination of complex society. This paper reviews some of these theoretical and methodological possibilities, and then looks at the case example of borderline hypertension in 20th-century American culture drawn from the author's dissertation research.
