R/sub L/ and C/sub dyn/ in guinea pigs were measured during 1-hr exposures to 2.6 ppM SO/sub 2/ and 3.5 ppM formaldehyde (with or without submicronic polydisperse NaCl aerosol) and sulfuric acid mist (15.4 mg/m/sup 3/, 0.8, 2.5 or 7 ..mu..m). SO/sub 2/, formaldehyde, and 0.8-..mu..m H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ produced bronchial constriction. The 2.5-..mu..m H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ occluded some larger airways. During prolonged exposures of 3 to 4 hr, response to SO/sub 2/ continued to increase, whereas that to formaldehyde peaked at 1 hr. Effect was greater when administered through tracheal cannula. Ten mg/m/sup 3/ of 0.04-..mu..m NaCi potentiated effect of SO/sub 2/ and formaldehyde. The 2.5-..mu..m NaCl did not affect SO/sub 2/ reaction. The 0.8-..mu..m, but not 2.5-..mu..m, H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ was synergistic with SO/sub 2/.
