Abstract:What do collaborative piano and university administration have in common? After sixteen years of working as a professor of Collaborative Piano/Vocal coach, I entered the world of administration. Making this shift revealed the lessons learned through collaborative piano and the unique strengths and abilities that a life in collaboration has given me. In this article, I reflect on my journey and the insights gained along the way.

Abstract:Studio instruction in voice inevitably involves the monitoring of pronunciation in the text of the song or aria. The contrastive approach regularly applied in ESL instruction is a resource that can clarify systematically the differences between languages, especially for the student whose first language is not English. Instruction based on a firm basic knowledge of the sound pattern of a student’s first language—especially those outside the languages of the standard literature—provides an enhanced understanding of singing in languages other than the student’s own, more than imitative modeling alone can.

Abstract:While studies have defined voice teacher expertise, seldom have associations been made between voice teachers and their students’ performing achievements. This study investigated which characteristics and attributes of successful classical and music theatre voice teachers influence student success. A sample of 123 Australian voice teachers (77% females, 22% males, 1% non-binary), aged 26–78 years old (M=48.23), completed an online, quantitative survey examining teacher background, experience, and genre. Additionally, standardised, quantitative measures examined psychological components such as teacher empathy and leadership. Findings demonstrated statistically significant associations between greater student achievement and the teacher’s own performance and teacher training and achievements as well as the number of students they have taught. Additionally, teacher leadership, specifically training facilitation and positive feedback, was statistically positively associated with student achievement. Teacher genre was not found to influence student success. These findings indicate that incorporating leadership training into voice pedagogy courses, while facilitating ongoing performing and professional development, could contribute to voice teacher expertise which would conceivably produce more successful students.

NATS member Edrie Means Weekly has been a pedagogue and performing artist of both opera and musical theatre for over 35 years. In this article, Edrie discusses the audition process at the Kennedy City and in New York City resulting in her being cast as a standby for five Broadway stars in the 2011 revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies starring Bernadette Peters. Four of the five roles have large solo songs including the iconic songs “Broadway Baby” and “I’m Still Here”. The four songs were each written in a different musical style ranging from classical to full out traditional belt. As a vocal pedagogue, she discusses the styles of each song and the Vocal Stylisms or effects she added for emotion and expression to enhance the style. Edrie also includes one of her own vocal exercises she developed for herself back in the late 1980s to create laryngeal flexibility as she performed professionally in opera and musical theatre. She includes a couple of stretches useful for singers and dancers which were provided by Follies Broadway choreographer Warren Carlyle. Edrie talks about track cards and being a swing and discusses her preparation to build stamina to sing and dance a seven-minute tap song. Edrie Means Weekly’s article provides advice for those preparing for singing multiple styles in one show.

World Voice Day with its theme of Your Voice Matters, is celebrated on April 16 each year. This observance encourages NATS members to seek out the resources necessary to promote healthy voice use. NATS members have access to a wide variety of resources including the Journal of Singing, NATS Live Learning Center, the Science-Informed Voice Pedagogy Resources, Vocapedia, and NATS Chats. Another resource to access for education of respectful and inclusive voice use is our I.D.E.A. Toolkit. Its three modules educate us in ways we can include and celebrate every voice within NATS because All Voices Matter. Every. Single. One.
