The southern African genus Dasplttis Loew, 1858, is revised and a key presented for the separation of six species D. vulpes, D. hirtus, D. hermann; ([ormerly Microstylum), D. setithoracicus (formerly Neodysmachus) and two new species, D. placodes (from northern Transvaal) and D. s/enoura (from northern Cape Province). Two new southern African genera are described: Remotomyia, with four species (R. albosetatus (formerly Daspit/is) and three new oncs R. brunales, R. longipalpus and R. pennthae) and Anasitlomos with a single new species (A. chrysopos). A key to these and other related genera of the tribe Stenopogonini is presented.

When examining closely workers of L. schwabi Ford and L. stuhlmanni Mayr, collected by Dr G. Arnold in Bulawayo and Chirinda Forest (S. Rhod.), and determined by him and comparing them with specimens of stuhlmanni, collected by Dr J. H. Grobler in Barberton (Tvl.), (also determined by Dr Arnold), I noticed that the ratio of the width of the head across the anterior margin to the width across the eyes is the same in both species.

This paper is based mainly on material from South Africa. Part was collected by the author in November-December 1961, another part was collected by B. R. and P. Stuckenberg, mainly in the Drakensberg Mountains and a number of interesting specimens, including one new species descriptionbed below, have been examined which were bred from their leaf-mines by Dr L. Vi?½ri Some British Museum (Nat. Hist.) accession material has been studied and a few species from Kenya, Tanganyika and Ethiopia have also been considered.

This genus was erected by Emery (1912) to include seven species, of which six had been originally descriptionbed as belonging to the genus Atopomyrmex E.Andre. Recently I received two specimens of an ant from Dr. J. C. Faure, collected at Marieps, E. Transvaal, which appeared to have some of the characters of both Terataner and Atopula, and therefore led me to examine more closely the characters of those genera as set forth by Emery in the Genera Insectorum (1922). The conclusion arrived at is that Terataner bottegoi Em. and the new species transvaalensis descriptionbed be!ow should be placed in a new subgenus Tranetera.
