In France and Brazil, the research on and practices of information sciences and communication include the concepts of media and device. These concepts are coupled with perceptions from the cultural, human, technical and institutional elements that comprise information organization and gathering in science, culture and society. Using an initial framework comprising concepts and questions, this article considers two information and communication devices for socially gathering information and media that shape such information. Such devices include professional journals, which provide a link between theoretical and practical information, and health care almanacs, which comprise dialogue and debates over multiple forms of information to produce and collect information through a collaborative process. The health care field and its multiple dimensions (epistemological, political, biological and social) presumably require complex contextual, theoretical and practical questions to understand the information-communication devices and media used in health care. Thus, we conclude that understanding health care information and communication devices is important given the current abundance of technology and available information and the relationships between the technical devices and social practices used to share information, which require adopting a cultural attitude toward technical innovations.

This article assumes that information for the Brazilian Network of Human Milk Banks (“Network”; Rede Brasileira de Bancos de Leite Humano - rBLH-BR) has been collected and seeks to understand the dynamics of such. This study will provide an overview on information relevant to the rBLH-BR using 860 studies presented at the Network’s five conferences. We attempted to identify the areas with the greatest interest, the theoretical and methodological approaches as well as whether such information is formal and informal. Sixty-eight percent of such studies are devoted to breastfeeding care or cultural dimension. Information and communication appear with relative frequency, ranging from 0.6% to 2%. The quantitative approach predominates, but the qualitative methodology has grown. Behavior, biology and statistics are combined, which unites biology and society as well as nature and culture. The Network uses such information in a hybrid manner through combining academic information and practical needs as well as formal and informal scientific communication channels. The Network is strong because it can use information in multiple forms, which strengthens the ties among its members.

The Internet has revolutionized how people communicate and access information. As this technology becomes increasingly widespread and affordable around the world, it is fundamental to understand how and why people access information online and the role it plays in daily life. Gaps in both Internet access and literacy may further polarize socioeconomic groups. This study sought to create a community profile on Internet use and health-seeking behavior in a low-income population. Researchers conducted both oral questionnaires (n=102) and qualitative interviews (n=17) at a public primary health clinic that caters to a nearby slum complex, during a four-week time period. Of all participants, 60.8% reported using the Internet. The study found that Internet use for health-related information and help was present but not prevalent among participants. According to this study, doctor-patient relationships have only partially permeated the virtual sphere, yet knowledge of available online health information is widespread. Results in this study encourage the use of Internet resources in the implementation of community level public health interventions.

ABSTRACT This paper uses the approach known as Service Dominant Logic (SDL) and Co-creation of value to introduce the basic concepts of Service Science and SDL in the health information system area. Then the article shows that interaction through asynchronous communication may produce value. In this approach, one should not separate product attributes from service attributes, since they are complementary. Some Marketing concepts are present in our daily routine and can be applied to several service domains such as Education, Transport, Public Services, Health and Information and Communication Technology. Users of Health Systems have already been ranked in the context of Service Science. As part of an ongoing research that explores the use of virtual forums, the article presents an example - using the Forum DATASUS - to show the importance of interaction via asynchronous communication tool between users and service providers, in the development and implementation of Health Information Systems. This paper presents the teaching experiences of oral health coordinators and three teachers in a distance specialization course for teams in the Family Health Strategy and their perceptions about the development of the discipline. A final report was prepared together with the participants. The participants concluded that the development of the discipline of oral health provided an opportunity for the dentists participating in the Family Health Strategy to reflect on a broader concept of health and contributed to the planning of their territorial activities. In this sense, the training, which used a virtual learning platform, reflected the idea that the goal of education should be to create a dialogue between teachers and students so that the needs and knowledge of different subjects can be integrated into collective concepts in a sharedknowledge construction process.

AbstractBrazilian have unequal access to specialized health care services, especially in remote municipalities. Telehealth is a strategy to support primary health care professionals in such municipalities. The objective for this study was to report a successful experience from the Telehealth Network of Minas Gerais (Rede de Teleassistencia de Minas Gerais - RTMG), which highlights the contribution of this service to the Brazilian Unified Health System principles (Sistema Unico de Saude – SUS). The methodology used includes empirical observations, which compose a retrospective observational study that evaluates teleconsultations and cost-effectiveness. In 2005, public funds from the state government and research development agencies financed RTMG construction, which was intended to connect hospitals from six public universities to primary health caregivers in remote municipalities. In 2006, 82 municipalities were served. The service was expanded several times, and it has reached 660 municipalities since 2012. As of February 2013, 1,165,410 electrocardiograms and 48,680 teleconsultations had been conducted (6.1 activities/municipality/week mean). The teleconsultations averted potential referrals for specialized health care services by 80%. The return on investment was R$ 3.75 for every R$ invested. In conclusion, the RTMG facilitates universality, equality and integrality in the Minas Gerais public health care system as well as contributes to improved care quality.Key words: Telemedicine; Primary Health Care; Health Management; Public Health Informatics; Information Technol

This study presents a historical overview of mortality statistics and their different uses. Current perceptions on mortality statistics were initially formed through a publication by John Graunt in 1662. Herein, the relevance of William Farr’s role in the development of mortality statistics (approximately 1838) is discussed. In addition, we compare the uses for morbidity and mortality data; the different uses are discussed, qualified and recommended. The Ministry of Health’s Mortality Information System (Sistema de Informacoes sobre Mortalidade - SIM) was established over 30 years ago and has improved quantitatively and qualitatively. Such improvements facilitate different uses for statistics by the Brazilian Unified Health System (Sistema Unico de Saude – SUS) management and other users.

In certain situations, oral communication can be compromised and manual gestures may not be clearly interpreted, a reality experienced by many patients admitted to the intensive care unit who are unable to communicate via speech. These patients often have limited means of communication and resort to eye blinking, flash cards or writing. The use of a mobile assistive device was evaluated as an alternative form of communication between intensive care patients and health professionals. Thirty-two patients unable to communicate orally participated in the study. The statistical analysis included Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis and chi-square tests. A significance level of 0.05 was adopted. Significant differences were found in the relationship between the non-oral communication condition of the patient and the patient’s gender (p < 0.001) and between the initial interaction screens and gender (p = 0.033). The results show that the communication provided by mobile assistive devices can facilitate the communication of both basic and complex messages between the patient and the health professional.
