Randomness is a critical issue in peer-to-peer networks because random numbers allow us to fairly select the candidates, resolve the lotteries, select block producers, etc. The difficulty is that each participant wants to verify that the random number was randomly generated, this led to the invention of verifiable random functions (VRF). The VRF is a pseudo-random function that provides a solution to blockchain-based random number generation. This paper focuses on the implementation of an elliptic curve-based VRF introduced by NIST called ECVRF-secp256r1 in Solidity. The algorithm verifies the randomness on-chain, tests the gas consumption at each stage, and compares it to the ECVRF-secp256k1.

Embossing is an important design and functionality element. For instance, embossing is used to apply braille letters on medical products, or to enhance folding packages or brochures due to haptic effects. Usually, a multilayered cardboard material is used for such types of products. Up to now, high-quality and functional embossing has so far been associated with an extraordinarily large amount of experience-based know-how and with many cost-intense trial-and-error experiments due to the mechanical complexity of cardboard material. In the presented work it is shown how experimental investigations and numerical simulations based on Finite-Element-Analysis can contribute to a virtual prediction of the embossing process and, therefore, can help to reduce time-consuming and expensive experiments.

Intensive land use is one of the main drivers contributing to the loss of pollinating insects due to the distribution of pesticides and the reduction of flower diversity. This work analyzes honey bee pollen samples taken from areas of different agricultural intensity. The aim is to classify the plant species contained in the pollen samples using DNA barcodes and nanopore sequencing in order to evaluate the influence of different agro-environmental measures on the foraging behavior of honey bees. First results concern the DNA extraction and the identification of universal primer sequences in preparation for sequencing with the MinION Mk1c from Oxford Nanopore Technologies.

We have designed a suitable detection beam path for color channel-selected imaging with a scientific CMOS camera. The two detection channels allow distance changes to be measured at the molecular level using Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). In addition to the microscope setup, this work details the imaging and color channel selection of the fluorescently labeled samples and the modulated laser excitation.

Urban production in the sense of producing and processing material goods in densely populated areas (Brandt et al. 2017) has been gaining in importance again in recent years. Reasons for this include more resource-efficient and lower-emission manufacturing processes, shorter transport and work routes, or proximity to research and educational institutions. While many studies on urban production refer to agglomeration areas, there is a lack of knowledge on less densely populated regions and also on small and medium-sized cities. This article will take a look at this focus and present the initial findings of a research project that identifies framework conditions and networks together with companies in small and medium-sized towns in Saxony.

As part of a research project, an end mill for dry machining of adhesive aluminum alloys was developed and tested. To adapt the tribological conditions in the contact area between chip and tool, the chip surfaces are provided with microstructures parallel to the peripheral cutting edge. In addition, a new type of coating composite consisting of a hard and a soft material is applied to the carbide substrate. By eliminating the need for cooling lubricant, the new development results in reduced environmental and health impacts as well as financial advantages. This article deals with the development and evaluation of an FEM model for the dimensioning of the microstructures and provides insights into first experimental results.
